The Dallas Stars are proving that Esa Lindell's quiet defensive work, alongside Tyler Seguin and Jake Oettinger, is just as valuable as the star power driving their playoff run.
The Dallas Stars may boast star power in names like Jason Robertson, Mikko Rantanen, Miro Heiskanen, and Jake Oettinger, but sometimes it's the quiet, unheralded plays that truly define their success.
One player who rarely gets the spotlight but deserves far more credit is veteran defenseman Esa Lindell.
In a recent playoff series against the Colorado Avalanche, it was Lindell who came up with the kind of game-saving efforts that don't always show up in highlight reels.
His blocks and positioning were just as important as any goal scored, and they proved once again why he's one of the Stars' most valuable defenders.
The turning point came in overtime when Colorado's Artturi Lehkonen had a wide-open chance with Jake Oettinger out of position. Lindell slid across and blocked the shot, preventing what looked like a certain game-winner. Just minutes later, Tyler Seguin scored the overtime goal that gave Dallas the victory.
It wasn't the first time Lindell came up huge that night, he finished with three blocked shots and more than 27 minutes of ice time. As The Hockey News pointed out, those defensive plays were the unsung backbone of the Stars' win.
One teammate summed it up perfectly:
"For every Seguin, you need a Lindell. Those plays save games, even if they don't make headlines."
Lindell has built a reputation as a stay-at-home defenseman who does the dirty work, clearing the crease, killing penalties, and sacrificing his body to block shots. His style may not generate flashy stats, but his presence gives Heiskanen and others the freedom to attack offensively.
Personally, I think his reliability has been one of the biggest reasons Dallas has remained a consistent contender.
At 30 years old, Lindell has logged nearly 600 games in Dallas and has been a steady part of the team's defensive core. His name may not be trending on social media, but inside the locker room, there's no doubt about his value.
It's time for Esa Lindell to get more love.
