The NHL announced that Mason Marchment has been fined $2,000 for embellishment during a game against the Ottawa Senators on December 8. He is charged under NHL Rule 64 which aims to penalize players for serious cases of embellishment and diving during NHL games. Fines can be assessed to both players and coaches for this offence.

Fines are assessed on a graduating scale from the first infraction to the eighth:

1, Warning, N/A
2, $2,000, N/A
3, $3,000, N/A
4, $4,000, N/A
5, $5,000, $2,000
6, $5,000, $3,000
7, $5,000, $4,000
8, $5,000, $5,000

Left side is the player fines, right side is the coach’s. During a game against the Colorado Avalanche on November 26, Marchment was issued a warning for his first infraction. For his second infraction, he was issued a $2,000 fine pursuant to the chart above.

The second infraction was caused by a diving play from Marchment after he drew a tripping call on Ottawa Senators forward Derick Brassard. Immediately after the play, the Senators bench could be seen mocking him for what they saw as an embellished play.

The incident occurred just after the five minute mark of the third period. There was a faceoff in the Senators zone and when the Senators centreman won the puck back, Marchment skated after it. At that point, Brassard lightly tapped Marchment on his jersey, which prompted Marchment to fall down on the play. It was called a tripping penalty on the play. The Dallas Stars ended up winning the game 4-3 in overtime.

Mason Marchment is in the first year of a four-year $18 million contract he signed with the Stars in the offseason. In 31 games this year, he scored nine goals and 19 points. Over his 122-game career played with the Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, and Toronto Maple Leafs, he has 29 goals and 77 points.
