The Pittsburgh Penguins have been trying to manage rebuilding for the future, while also staying competitive due to having a few veterans on the roster. However, this is much easier said than done, and it has led to the Penguins dangling players in trade talks around the league.
One of those veterans is defenseman Erik Karlsson, who is coming off another solid season for the team. With Pittsburgh heading more toward a rebuild, Karlsson may prefer to play for a winning team, and it could see a trade come about.
NHL writer Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report posted a few trade ideas for Karlsson, with the Dallas Stars being mentioned. Dallas could be a solid landing spot for the multi-time All-Star, giving both sides a beneficial part of a deal.
"They also have one of the NHL's most impressive defensive depth charts down the left side of their defense, and one of the least impressive down the right side.
"This is a natural match. Especially with Dallas being a bona fide Stanley Cup contender, which should appeal to Karlsson," Gretz wrote.
For the Stars to finally get over the hump in the Western Conference, adding a player like Karlsson could do the trick. The veteran could bring more relevancy to the Dallas defense, and he would add some real offensive impact.
Last season for the Penguins, Karlsson posted 11 goals and 42 goals over 82 games that he played in. The seven-time All-Star showed strong production, even at his age, and he could really help this Stars team.
Dallas has dreams of winning a Stanley Cup with their current group of players, but something needs to change. Adding Karlsson could help this squad get over the hump, even if the asking price is high for the veteran.
