The Dallas Stars are facing a critical salary cap decision as young defenceman Thomas Harley pushes for a contract extension, with Miro Heiskanen's deal looming large in the background and NHL rumours heating up ahead of the 2025-26 season.

The Dallas Stars enter the 2025-26 season with plenty of questions surrounding their salary cap, and one of the biggest storylines involves the future of defenceman Thomas Harley.

After back-to-back strong seasons, Harley is now in position for a major contract extension, and rumours are already circulating about how far general manager Jim Nill is willing to go to keep him in Dallas.

Harley has become a cornerstone of the Stars' blue line since breaking through in 2023-24. His offensive production, highlighted by consecutive 15-goal seasons, has made him one of the most reliable young defencemen in the NHL.

Dallas Stars contract extension talks for Thomas Harley

With Dallas already investing heavily in Miro Heiskanen, the organization now faces the challenge of rewarding Harley without disrupting its long-term salary structure.

Reports suggest the Stars may use Heiskanen's contract as an "internal cap" to guide negotiations. But if Harley continues to perform at his current level, sticking to that number may prove difficult.

On the Empty Netters podcast, Sportsnet's Jeff Marek explained, "Dallas wants to keep Miro Heiskanen as the highest-paid defenceman, but Thomas Harley is pushing that limit with his play." Heiskanen is locked into an eight-year deal with an average annual value of $8.45 million, a figure that could soon be challenged.

I believe Harley has earned a long-term deal, even if it means the Stars stretch their internal budget. His growth has been undeniable, and it feels like the right time for Dallas to commit.
