David Kampf Termination Coming

The David Kampf situation in Toronto looks to be almost over. Darren Dreger from TSN is reporting that the Toronto Maple Leafs will be placing Kampf on waivers today for the purpose of contract termination. If he clears waivers tomorrow, he will become a free agent and will be free to sign with another NHL team.

Back on November 6th, the Maple Leafs suspended Kampf without pay for failing to play for the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. Obviously, that wasn’t enough to force him back into the Marlies lineup, so after consulting with both the NHL and the NHLPA, the only option left is to terminate his contract.

Kampf played a valuable role in the Maple Leafs’ bottom six. He was a key part of the team’s penalty kill, too. However, that all changed once new head coach Craig Berube stepped behind the bench last season. Under Berube, Kampf saw his ice time diminish. When the team added Scott Laughton, Dakota Joshua, and Nicolas Roy, the writing was on the wall for Kampf.

Once he becomes a free agent, I wouldn’t be surprised if former Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas signs Kampf to play in Pittsburgh. Dubas was a big fan of Kampf. He was the one who brought Kampf to Toronto. Another likely option is Kampf returning to the Chicago Blackhawks. That is where he played before coming to the Maple Leafs.

It has been a messy season for Kampf, and I’m sure he is looking for a fresh start with a new team to continue his dream of playing in the NHL. We’ll find out tomorrow whether he clears waivers, but either way, Kampf will no longer be a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.
