Pius Suter has a new deal in today’s news. He has signed with the St. Louis Blues on a two-year deal worth $4 million per year. The versatile centre reached a career high in goals this season and has his reward.

Pius Suter, Club Reach Agreement

Suter had done everything asked of him since joining Vancouver on a two-year deal in 2023-24. Undrafted, he honed his game in Switzerland before getting a one-year, entry-level deal with Chicago when he was 24 years old.

Despite his late start, he’s fit into the league as a solid journeyman from Day One. He did then what he’s done every season since: good positional play, good speed, smart defence, and some scoring. It’s not exciting, but it’s what every team needs sooner or later.

Cashing in with a two-year deal with Detroit at more than triple the salary, he was his reliable, versatile self. That wasn’t enough for the Red Wings to keep him, and he went without a free-agent contract until late in 2023’s offseason.

His $3.25 million price tag was too rich for any team, unfortunately. But Pius Suter’s loss was the Canucks’ gain, and they snapped him up by offering two years at $1.6 million each.

Now What Happens

He had been more than fair value for Vancouver, stabilizing their centre position down low. His versatility meant he could move up to the wing when needed with little change in his skill set.

Getting Pius Suter signed is a positive step for the team as it progresses through free agency. He was, and the bet is that he will continue to be, a rock-solid contributor. If he adds to his scoring totals, that’s a nice benefit. But it’s not really why he was signed.

If the Swiss centre can continue doing what he’s always done, that will be enough. Other people can be exciting, so long as Suter is regular as clockwork. He joins a St. Louis squad some proven producers, it seems like a great fit.
