Detroit Red Wings place Filip Zadina on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination

The Detroit Red Wings are placing forward Filip Zadina on unconditional waivers at Noon E.T. for the purpose of contract termination. The decision is mutual. Zadina still has two years remaining on his contract paying him $1.825 million per season

The Red Wings waived Zadina on Monday after they could not find a suitable trade partner for the Czech forward. Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman said Zadina and his representatives had requested a trade earlier in the off-season.

The 23-year-old collected three goals and four assists for seven points in 30 games with the Red Wings during the 2022-23 season. He also appeared in two games with the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins, picking up a goal.

Zadina was initially selected No. 6 overall in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft after notching a team-leading 44 goals and 82 points in 57 games with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL; as a result of his performance, Zadina won the Mike Bossy Trophy as the QMJHL’s Best Prospect, he led all rookies in goals, assists and points.

The Pardubice, Czech product made his NHL debut in 2018-19, appearing in nine games where he registered three points. He notched 35 points in 59 AHL games in his rookie campaign as an 18-year-old. He found a regular role in the lineup in 2020-21, where he appeared in 49 games, notching 19 points in that frame.

Through 190 career games over parts of five NHL regular seasons with the Red Wings, Zadina has accumulated 28 goals and 68 points. He has yet to appear in a Stanley Cup Playoff game.
