The Swedish forward played in 75 games with the Red Wings last season. Berggren scored 12 goals and added 12 assists for a total of 24 points. The 75 games played was a career-high for Berggren, a second-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
Berggren made his NHL debut during the 2022-23 season. In 67 games, Berggren scored 15 goals and recorded 28 points. Through his first 23 NHL games, Berggren quickly tallied five goals and eight assists for 13 points. Berggen finished the season in the top 10 among NHL rookies in goals with 15 while ranked 14th with 28 points. He also recorded the highest shooting percentage of any Red Wings rookie since Henrik Zetterberg in the 2002–03 season.
Since then, Berggren has not reached those scoring totals. Last year brought him close. It will be interesting to see how Berggren performs in his fourth season and if he is able to replicate and exceed his rookie year totals.
Berggren’s role may depend on how the roster looks heading into next season. The Red Wings are rumoured to be shopping forward Vladimir Tarasenko. Furthermore, Patrick Kane is an unrestricted free agent. Whether or not he returns for a third season may determine Berggren’s role next season.
Berggren will be a restricted free agent for three more seasons until he is eligible for full free agency. Until then, the Red Wings will maintain Berggren’s rights, unless they choose to trade him, not tender him a contract, or a team tenders him an offer sheet.
If Berggren can make a name for himself in the next three seasons, he will be in for a big payday either from the Red Wings, or another team.
