Detroit Red Wings Sign Daniil Tarasov

The Detroit Red Wings are signing goalie Daniil Tarasov to a one-year deal with a $2 million AAV. This signals that he’ll be the backup for John Gibson this season, while Michal Postava and Trey Augustine will be the two goalies down in Grand Rapids in the AHL. Tarasov was in goal in the season finale against the Red Wings when they lost to Florida 8-1 on April 15th. Tarasov, in 33 games this past season for Florida, went 13-15-3. He had a 3.05 goals-against average and an .895 save percentage.

The 27-year-old goalie was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets with the 86th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He appeared in four games his rookie season, going 0-2-0 with a .937 save percentage and a 2.40 goals-against average. He would go on to spend four seasons in Columbus, where he appeared in 65 games, going 19-34-6 with a .898 save percentage, a 3.44 goals-against average, and a shutout. Tarasov has also appeared in 34 games in the AHL, going 17-12-3 with a 3.25 goals-against average and a .894 save percentage. Before coming to North America, he spent the 2020-21 season in the KHL and the VHL. In the KHL, he went 11-3-2 with a 2.07 goals-against average, a .925 save percentage, and two shutouts. In five games in the VHL, he went 3-1-1 with a 2.16 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage.
