Detroit Red Wings sign forward Daniel Sprong to one-year contract

The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Daniel Sprong to a one-year contract, Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek reported Saturday afternoon.

Sprong, 26, scored 21 goals and 46 points in 66 games with the Seattle Kraken during the 2022–23 regular season.

The six-foot winger added a goal and an assist in 10 games with the Kraken in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

According to Marek, Sprong’s new deal with the Red Wings carries a $2 million cap hit, representing a significant pay increase from the $750,000 he earned from the Kraken in 2022–23.

The Pittsburgh Penguins originally selected Sprong in the second round (No. 46 overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. The Amsterdam product made his NHL debut with the Penguins during the 2015–16 season.

Sprong never managed to establish himself as a regular with the Penguins before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks in 2018 in exchange for defenseman Marcus Pettersson.

After making brief stops with the Ducks and Washington Capitals, Sprong finally arrived in Seattle at the 2022 trade deadline in a deal that sent Marcus Johansson to D.C.

Through 268 games over parts of seven NHL seasons with the Penguins, Ducks, Capitals, and Kraken, Sprong has collected 67 goals and 116 points. He’s added a goal and two assists in 13 career playoff contests.

Sprong will now join a Red Wings forward group that also includes Dylan Larkin, Andrew Copp, David Perron, Robby Fabbri, Dominik Kubalik, Klim Kostin, Filip Zadina, Joe Veleno, Lucas Raymond, and Jonatan Berggren.
