Devils Claim Remi Poirier Off Waivers From Stars

The New Jersey Devils have added to their goalie ranks by claiming Remi Poirier off of waivers from the Dallas Stars per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Poirier has fill a full-time, AHL role for the last four seasons. He moved into an undisputed starting role last season and finished the year with a 27-19-8 record and .912 save percentage through 52 games.

There is no doubt that the Texas Stars were better with Poirier in net. He recorded a 70-51-16 record and .908 save percentage across 137 games in Texas, offering the AHL Stars year-over-year reliability in net. Those performances have established the 2020 sixth-round pick as an impactful pro, though he has yet to make his debut at the NHL level.

The Devils could finally grant Poirier with that opportunity. They are currently set to lean on Jake Allen and Nico Daws as their goaltending tandem after placing David Rittich on Sunday’s waiver wire. Neither Devils goalie is a runaway favorite for the starting role, though Allen recorded 17 wins and a .903 save percentage in 37 games last season.

Should New Jersey opt to rotate between goalies, Poirier’s presence could offer a bit more flexibility. He will enter a direct competition with Daws who has recorded 28 wins and a .892 save percentage in 78 games over the last two seasons.
