The New Jersey Devils just won their home opener on Oct. 1, so the team was in high spirits. However, some news came out on Friday, Oct. 2, that wasn’t as positive: Devils defenseman Seamus Casey was injured in their last preseason game on Sept. 26, and now we have word as to how severe the injury is. Casey will miss the next eight to 10 weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Casey looked primed to make the team after a strong preseason performance, since Johnathan Kovacevic is out with an injury. Unfortunately, that was thwarted by the preseason game against the New York Rangers.
Head coach Sheldon Keefe spoke to the media regarding Casey, stating, “He’s doing well in the sense that he got through surgery well. It was from the injury sustained in that Rangers game. It’s about an 8-10 week recovery, which is what they’re saying at this point.” The fact that Casey’s surgery went well is a big relief to both the Devils team and the Devils fans.
Casey was selected by the Devils in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft but didn’t start playing within the Devils organization until the 2024-25 season. He played in 30 games with the Devils’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate team, the Utica Comets, and recorded 18 points. Casey made his NHL debut on Oct. 4, 2024, and in his next game with the Devils, on Oct. 5, scored his first NHL goal. Throughout the entirety of the 2024-25 season, he played in 14 NHL games and recorded eight points.
Last season, he played in 29 games with the Comets and recorded 19 points (one goal and 18 assists). He played in two NHL games with the Devils as well but didn’t record any points. Casey’s 2025-26 season was cut short due to an injury that required surgery; it’s unfortunate that Casey has had to have a second surgery in such a short time.
Casey was primed and ready for a spot on the Devils’ third defensive pairing alongside Brenden Dillon, but now Declan Chisholm will be Dillon’s right-side defensive partner. Hopefully, Casey has a quick and speedy recovery and can enter the Devils lineup later in the season.
