Devils trade forward, draft pick to Flames for veteran goal-scorer
Tyler Toffoli Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports

The New Jersey Devils acquired forward Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames in exchange for forward Yegor Sharangovich and a 2023 third-round draft pick, the club announced Tuesday afternoon.

Toffoli, 31, scored 34 goals and 73 points in 82 games with the Flames during the 2022–23 regular season. He’s under contract through 2024 at a $4.25 million annual cap hit.

Sharangovich, 25, collected 13 goals and 30 points in 73 games with the Devils in 2022–23. He did not record a point in three games with the Devils during the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Flames also received their own third-round pick (No. 80) in the 2023 NHL Draft from the Devils in the trade. Calgary originally traded that selection to the Seattle Kraken in 2022 as part of the deal for Calle Jarnkrok.

Toffoli originally joined the Flames from the Montreal Canadiens at the 2022 trade deadline. He collected 23 points in 37 games with the Flames down the stretch and added five points in 12 games during the playoffs.

Sharangovich is a pending restricted free agent with arbitration rights. The Devils originally selected the 6-foot-2 winger in the fifth round (No. 141 overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft.

Through 205 career games over parts of three seasons with the Devils, Sharangovich has collected 53 goals and 106 points. Toffoli has racked up 227 goals and 466 points (and two Stanley Cups) in 733 career games with the Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks, Canadiens and Flames.

The Flames now possess six selections in the 2023 NHL Draft: their own picks in the first, second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh rounds.
