On Friday morning’s episode of Donnie & Dhali — The Team, CHEK TV‘s Don Taylor and Rick Dhaliwal discussed the recent news about former Vancouver Canucks goaltending coach Ian Clark that Elliotte Friedman discussed on 32 Thoughts — The Podcast.
The noise surrounding Clark began in late August when the Canucks announced that he had asked for a new position (Goaltending Coach and Director of Goaltending) with the team and will now serve as a goalie scout and goaltending development coach. Clark is considered one of the highest respected goaltending coaches in the league, so the news is shocking as it looked like a demotion.
Here is what Dhaliwal had to say regarding the matter:
“I said last week, I will not be surprised if the Canucks give him permission to talk to other team. Now we’re hearing he’s been linked to the [New Jersey] Devils – I could throw some teams out there, but I’m not going to.”
“Look at his resume and respect around the league and you tell me he should be a goalie scout. He shouldn’t be a goalie scout. He should be the director of goaltending. I think that’s the title he wanted, but the Canucks gave him a title of goalie scout – he wasn’t even at training camp, why was he not at training camp?”
After playing a clip from Friedman, the two discussed if the Canucks relationship with Ian Clark has gone in a bad direction.
“I can confirm that,” Dhaliwal said. “I don’t think the relationship is in a good state. I think it’s definitely soured. There’s a lot of things at play here. One is the demotion to goalie scout.”
“It was his decision, by the way. Let’s get one thing straight: It was him going to the Canucks and saying, ‘My shoulders, my knees, I can’t do the goalie coach every day.’ One thing that started hearing whispers [of] in the media, that he was to blame for the Demko situation. He was to blame for overworking Demko. He was to blame for Demko’s current situation. I don’t know if that’s necessarily true. You have a ton of coaches that have overplayed Demko. You can’t put this all on Ian Clark.”
While Clark’s relationship with the Canucks may have soured, it doesn’t sound like there is any ill-will between Clark and head coach Rick Tocchet.
“One guy in the Canucks organization that absolutely loves Ian Clark and thinks he’s doing a great job is Rick Tocchet. I haven’t heard that there’s issues with Tocchet and Clark. I just heard that Tocchet respects him, and he likes the job he’s doing.”
Dhaliwal ended by highlighting what Clark has meant to this franchise and where their relationship currently sits.
“He drafted [Arturs] Silovs. When Casey DeSmith was ready to play against Nashville, it was Ian Clark who said ‘No, no, no, no, no, we’re sticking with Silovs’. Major, major decisions have been made by Ian Clark in this organization. But I don’t think they’re in a good state right now, Donnie. I think this relationship is a little bit sour.”
Clark has an outstanding resume of producing high-end calibre goaltenders in the National Hockey League; Jacob Markstrom, Thatcher Demko and a promising Arturs Silovs.
The suspicion seems to be growing that the long-time Canucks goaltending coach will likely continue to build that resume elsewhere.

Juraj Slafkovsky is one of the most promising players in the NHL, but now he has been called out by David Pastrnak, who stated he lacks humility. After being picked No. 1 overall in 2022 NHL Draft, expectations were high in Montreal for young star Juraj Slafkovsky, and thus far, he's shown glimpses of being the elite level player many expected when he entered the National Hockey League. However, there are still some major steps to go, and in a recent interview, Boston Bruins star David Pastrnak pointed out perhaps one area where the 21-year old may need to improve moving forward. When asked about Slafkovsky and his potential, Pastrnak gave nothing but a glowing review of the young Canadiens star, but he did note that he believes Slafkovsky needs more humility. 'He's still a young player who is gaining experience in the NHL every year. This season it was already clear that he gave the team more than before...He just needs a little more humility, he should set an example for the young ones.' On the ice, there's no doubting that Slafkovsky has the presence, the size and the talent to be a true star, posting 101 total points over the past two seasons, but for whatever reason, it appears as though Pastrnak believes he needs to improve off the ice before he can take a major leap in Montreal. Ultimately, the talent is still there for Slafkovsky, and at 21-years old, he'll continue to learn off the ice, and if he can go anywhere close to living up to the potential that he's shown in his first three years at the NHL level, there's no doubt that he can be a big time star and help lead the Canadiens to significant post-season success.
One of the breakout stars of the offseason workout program for the Dallas Cowboys was tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford, who joined the team as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL draft. Spann-Ford has been making plays and impressing the coaching staff throughout OTAs, minicamp, and the first week of training camp. Unfortunately, he will be sidelined for the foreseeable future. On Monday, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed the promising tight end is likely "out a few weeks" with an ankle injury. Spann-Ford had been locked in one of the most heated training camp battles with former second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker for the backup tight end job behind Jake Ferguson, who inked a contract extension with Dallas over the weekend. Ferguson agreed to a four-year extension worth $52 million in new money, with $30 million guaranteed, so there is no question about who the team's starter will be. Depending on when Spann-Ford is able to return to the field, however, could determine who locks up the TE2 gig for the start of the regular season. The Cowboys kick off the 2025 preseason on Saturday, August 9, before facing the division rival Philadelphia Eagles in the regular season opener on Thursday, September 4.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht recently suggested the club and Baker Mayfield will sign a contract extension "when the time is right" because Tampa Bay wants Mayfield "to be our quarterback for a long time." During a Monday appearance on CBS Sports HQ, Mayfield broke some news regarding the three-year, $100M deal he signed to stay with the Buccaneers back in March 2024. "You know, right now, I’m under contract through 2026," Mayfield told CBS Sports' Pete Prisco, as shared by the JoeBucsFan website. "So it was really just about getting guaranteed money for 2026, and they did that. And that’s all I can ask for. I signed the contract and knew what it was." JoeBucsFan noted that Mayfield's $40M salary for 2026 was not previously guaranteed. That's no longer an issue for the 30-year-old after he guided the Buccaneers to back-to-back division titles. While Mayfield is working with his third offensive coordinator (Josh Grizzard) in three seasons with Tampa Bay, he's also coming off the best campaign of his pro career. According to Pro Football Reference, Mayfield ended the 2024 regular season ranked fourth in the NFL among qualified players with a 106.8 passer rating, third with 4,500 passing yards and tied for second with 41 touchdowns through the air. In Tampa Bay, Mayfield found a franchise that has let him be his true self after he spent time with the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams from January 2022 through January 2023. He's now the emotional leader of a Buccaneers offense that needed more than just solid play at the sport's most important position after living legend Tom Brady retired in February 2023. "Right now it’s winning," Mayfield said on Monday about his mindset for the upcoming season. "I know good things will happen after that. But I trust this place. I love being here. Obviously, [I’m] used to bouncing around. I’ve done that before, but I don’t want to leave." As of Monday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Buccaneers tied for seventh among the betting favorites at +1300 odds to win the NFC Championship Game held in January 2025. Even if Mayfield fails to lead Tampa Bay to Super Bowl LX, it sounds like he will remain with the Buccaneers through at least the start of the 2026 season.
Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders detailed the medical issue he has battled throughout the offseason in a Monday news conference. The coach, who turns 58 on Aug. 9, wasn't with his team during summer camp in June. The Pro Football Hall of Famer revealed it was because he had previously been diagnosed with bladder cancer. The tumor was discovered during a routine vascular scan. Sanders' doctor, Janet Kukreja, said her team removed his bladder and used parts of his intestine to create a new one. The cancer is now gone, and he will continue to coach this season. "The process wasn't easy," Sanders said of the doctors giving him multiple options to treat the cancer. Sanders said he was aware of the surgery before the NFL Draft in April. However, he told his sons, Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur and Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Shilo, that he just had a foot issue. The coach explained he didn't want his sons to have more to worry about as they prepare for their NFL careers. "I wanted them to focus on making the team and not focused on Dad," Deion Sanders said. "So they really don't know. My daughters do and this joker right here. Much love to my son, [Deion Sanders Jr.], who [didn't] leave my side since we found what was taking place." Deion Sanders said he's still adjusting to changes after the surgery. The coach has a catheter and said Colorado will have a porta-potty on the sideline, just in case he needs to use the bathroom during practices or games. Deion Sanders made a will in May, according to a clip posted to Deion Sanders Jr.'s YouTube channel on Sunday. The coach, though, isn't letting the fear of death weigh on his mind. "I've got too much life in me to be thinking about death — we gotta win a darn championship," he said. Deion Sanders' health is still a concern. He has had 14 surgeries (including the removal of his bladder) since 2021. For now, he appears eager to return to coaching after overcoming one of the biggest medical problems of his life.
