Did the Carolina Hurricanes Get Screwed?

RALEIGH, N.C. — The regular-season résumé says contender. The playoff draw says trouble.

Carolina Hurricanes finished the regular season with 113 points and the kind of consistency that usually earns a manageable first-round opponent. Instead, they open the playoffs against a surging Ottawa Senators team that arrives with momentum, confidence and nothing to lose.

It is a matchup that feels unfair on paper — and very real on ice.

Carolina, coached by Rod Brind’Amour, has built its identity on structure, pace and relentless pressure. The Hurricanes suppress shots, dominate possession and wear teams down over long series. In most years, that formula would be rewarded with a softer landing to start the postseason.

Not this time.

Ottawa enters as one of the league’s hottest teams down the stretch, playing loose offensively and riding strong goaltending at exactly the right moment. That combination makes them a dangerous first-round opponent, even against a higher seed.

The contrast is stark. Carolina brings experience, depth and systems discipline. Ottawa brings confidence, rhythm and the chaos of a team peaking at the right time.

And that is what makes the draw sting.

There is no path to a Stanley Cup that avoids good teams. The Hurricanes know that. Brind’Amour has built a locker room around that exact idea. But even by playoff standards, this feels like a harsh opening assignment for a 113-point club.

Still, there are no excuses in April.

Only matchups.

And this one comes fast — and loud.
