On Monday, July 6th, the Chicago Blackhawks announced that goaltender Drew Commesso re-signed with the team. The deal will keep Commesso in the Hawks organization until the end of the 2027-28 season.

He will become a restricted free agent at the end of the deal.

What It Means: Drew Commesso

After deciding not to go to arbitration, it became pretty clear that Drew Commesso and the Chicago Blackhawks had a contract in the works for the soon-to-be 24-year-old. Commesso at one point was the long-term plan for Chicago in net.

If it were not for the Spencer Knight trade, he most likely would have been the team’s backup goaltender as of last season. However, Arvid Soderblom has remained in that role for the time being.

The long-term IceHog, Commesso, is a very dependable goaltender who isn’t super flashy. Drew was able to squeeze out two wins for the Blackhawks when called upon this year. An interesting note in the contract is that the deal becomes one-way in 2027-28. This move suggests the long-term plan is to have Commesso in Chicago on a full-time basis a year from now.

What It Means: Chicago Blackhawks

Another domino falls with Drew Commesso’s signing. Kyle Davidson is signaling the changing of the guard on the depth chart with this contract. The prospects will soon be relied on as more than just prospects, starting this season. Commesso performed well as a call-up last season in three starts, including posting his first career shutout.
