Anaheim Ducks forward Alex Killorn recently reached the 1,000-game milestone as the Ducks visited the Colorado Avalanche on Jan. 23. He has had a long and storied history in the league with both the Ducks and the Tampa Bay Lightning. This milestone comes after 13 seasons of play and two Stanley Cup championships. Let’s take a look back at Killorn’s history in the NHL – and look forward to where he is going.

Killorn’s Early-Career Success

Killorn was selected in the third round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Lightning, but did not play professionally until 2012. He played collegiate hockey at Harvard before being assigned to the American Hockey League’s Norfolk Admirals to help them secure a Calder Cup championship. His path to the Lightning was delayed by the NHL lockout of 2012, but he began joining the lineup in 2013 once the lockout ended.

His first NHL goal was on Feb. 16, 2013, against his team’s in-state rivals, the Florida Panthers. He posted 19 points in his abbreviated rookie season and went on to play a full 82 games the season following. 2013-14 was a breakout season for Killorn, as he amassed 41 points (17 goals, 24 assists) and helped the Lightning to their first playoff appearance since 2011.

In the 2014-15 postseason, the forward set multiple records for Harvard alumni. He scored the first goal by a Harvard alum in a Stanley Cup Final game, and also became the first with multiple points in a Final. His 18 points were record-setting amongst all alumni who have played in the postseason. He scored a game-winning goal in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final, which “marked the second consecutive year in which a Harvard alum scored the series-clinching goal of a conference final”, per The Harvard Crimson.

The Stanley Cup Era

The 2018-19 season saw three big milestones for Killorn. He played his 500th NHL game against the Boston Bruins, scored his 100th career goal against the Philadelphia Flyers, and scored his first career hat trick against the Washington Capitals, all in the second half of the season.

He was named alternate captain to the Lightning in 2019-20, the season in which the team won its first of back-to-back Stanley Cup championships. He helped them take the first victory with 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 24 games. He was also nominated for the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy due to his charitable efforts for the Hillsboro Education Foundation during the pandemic.

During the shortened 2020-21 season, the forward had 33 points in 56 games, and the Lightning were on their way to the playoffs once again. Unfortunately, he was injured in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Montreal Canadiens and would not play the rest of the series. He still contributed 17 points in 19 games (eight goals, nine assists) before going out of the lineup.

The Anaheim Ducks

After a very impressive career with the Lightning, totaling 466 points across 805 games, Killorn signed a four-year contract with the Ducks in the 2023 offseason. In his first season with the team, he averaged 18:44 on ice each game, accumulating 36 points in 63 games.

In 2024-25, Killorn often found himself on the first or second lines and totaled 37 points in 82 games. He was named an alternate captain once again, backing up Radko Gudas. His veteran presence and playoff experience are valuable to the Ducks, as they have a lot of young players in the lineup and a lack of postseason runs as a team.

This season, his production is not up to par. He has just 18 points in 56 games. However, his experience, ambition, and leadership remain important to the team as they are hopeful for a playoff run for the first time in many seasons. Should they contend for the playoffs, he will bring valuable insight, stories, and skills to aid them in the chase for a Stanley Cup. Congratulations to Killorn for reaching this incredible milestone!
