A huge hit laid by Dylan Larkin on Chicago Blackhawks prospect AJ Spellacy on Wednesday night has caused fans to call for the suspension of the Red Wings captain.
The Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks rivalry goes back many years. It has renewed in the preseason and fireworks are already underway between the two teams. Chicago Blackhawks top prospect AJ Spellacy was looking to impact the game in his first NHL appearance. He decided to line up Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond with a big hit.
In response to the hit, both Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin were looking for revenge on the young forward. Lucas Raymond first slashed AJ Spellacy. Then as the puck went into the zone Dylan Larkin caught AJ Spellacy with a nasty elbow to the head.
The puck was nowhere near the play and Dylan Larkin was clearly just looking to get revenge on AJ Spellacy for the previous play. AJ Spellacy is a 2024 third-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks who was seeing his first taste of life in the NHL. Dylan Larkin went out of his way to intentionally take a shot at AJ Spellacy's head well after the puck was gone.
Despite it only being preseason, it would be shocking to see no discipline handed down to Dylan Larkin. The NHL Department of Player Safety, led by George Parros, should have an easy decision here. From all angles this hit is a suspension-worthy action and the league needs to make a statement protecting their players.
As more information becomes available regarding the fallout from this hit including potential punishment for Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin we will continue to update the situation.
