After taking a routine hit into the boards in the Jets’ preseason game against Calgary on Saturday night, Dylan Samberg was officially ruled out for 6-8 weeks with a broken wrist.
Arniel didn’t have an immediate update and said that they’ll know more in a day or two, and after time passed, it was made official this morning as the Jets took the ice at Hockey for All Centre for a training camp skate.
Here’s a replay of the hit that knocked Dylan Samberg out of last night’s #NHLJets game.

It was noted by Arniel that this hit and injury was a freak accident. While the injury provides an opportunity for other defenders to fill Samberg’s role in his absence, it also avoids the inevitable need to place one defenseman on waivers for now.
Samberg being ruled out is a massive blow to the Jets’ defensive corps and leaves a hole that will certainly be a significant one to fill. Similar to Josh Morrissey going down in the playoffs last season, one has to wonder if Haydn Fleury can step up yet again and fill that hole.
Since taking on a full-time role with the Jets in 2022-23, Samberg has been a top defensive defenseman in the league. He’s played big minutes, and his three-year contract carries an average annual value (AAV) of $5.75 million a season, which is a massive asset to the Jets.
While the Jets are without one of their top defenseman on opening night, this provides a great opportunity, as mentioned previously. At the same time, this is just another big test for the Jets as they’re set to navigate nearly two months without Samberg controlling the zone and shutting down opposing players.
