Easton Cowan will be provided with another chance to cap off his decorated major junior career with a Memorial Cup in store.

Cowan and the London Knights defeated the Moncton Wildcats 5-2 on Friday, advancing to Sunday’s final against the Medicine Hat Tigers. London lost in last year’s final to the Saginaw Spirit.

“I thought that was our best game of the tournament so far,” Cowan said post-game. “Had a really good first, kind of laid back in the second. Then our third was definitely the best period of the tournament.”

“We had everyone scoring today, lots of depth and a huge win for us.”

Cowan added an empty-net goal and an assist, while Landon Sim, Denver Barkey, Blake Montgomery and Jesse Nurmi also scored for the Knights. The 2o-year’s old best play of the night occurred in the second period, where Cowan waited out Moncton’s defence and patiently tossed a cross-ice feed over to Barkey, London’s captain, for his first goal of the tournament.

Cowan was named to the OHL’s second all-star team on Friday , after registering 29 goals and 69 points in 46 regular season games, before adding 13 goals and 39 points in 17 playoff games. Maple Leafs’ 2024 first-round pick Ben Danford was named to the OHL’s third all-star team.

Ahead of Sunday’s final, Cowan is the tournament’s leading scorer with two goals and six points. It’s been an incredible major junior career for Cowan, who has cemented himself as the Maple Leafs’ top prospect after being selected 28th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. He’s won everything possible at the OHL level and was named to the Memorial Cup All-Star team last year, an honour he’ll surely receive this tournament regardless of Sunday’s result. Medicine Hat defeated London during the round-robin, providing the perfect circumstances for revenge in the final game of Cowan’s career with the Knights.
