Earlier today, the Greensboro Gargoyles announced that they have acquired goaltender Conor Ungar on loan from the Edmonton Oilers organization.

Background

Connor Ungar is a 6’1 goaltender from Calgary who spent last season in the ECHL with the Fort Wayne Komets. Last season, Ungar went 19-12-4 with a 2.74 GAA and a .903 SV%. Prior to joining the professional ranks, Ungar spent time in the WHL with Brandon, Red Deer, and Moose Jaw. His best WHL season came with Moose Jaw during the 2022-2023 campaign, where he went 26-7-0 with a 2.58 GAA and a .925 SV%. Following his time in Moose Jaw, Ungar joined Brock University in USports. During his time at Brock University, Ungar went 20-6-0 with a 2.15 GAA and a .932 SV%. Ungar has already joined the Gargoyles and will be available for their upcoming series against Trois-Rivieres.

Impact on Greensboro

By adding Ungar, the Gargoyles have made a major move and added significant talent to the crease. With the addition of Ungar the Gargoyles now have two goaltenders under NHL contracts. It is extremely likely that Greensboro will be shifting from Ruslan Khazheyev taking the bulk of the starts to a near 50-50 split in net. I cannot stress enough that this is a major addition to the Gargoyles and will be a major upgrade from their previous situation. Head Coach Scott Burt has clearly focused on upgrading the defensive aspects of the Gargoyles. Greensboro’s start to their season has been rough as they are currently 0-2-2 and have seen multiple defensive lapses. Greensboro, despite being winless so far, has made vast improvements in each game they’ve played. I would expect the recent additions to the locker room to help make an immediate impact and help the Gargoyles finally get over the hump to get their first win in franchise history.
