ECHL: Greensboro Gargoyles Sign Demetrios Koumontzis

Background

Demetrios Koumontzis , 25, is a former fourth-round draft pick of the Calgary Flames. He played collegiately at Arizona State University, where he appeared in 115 games, scoring 15 goals and adding 39 assists for a total of 54 points. Like many of the Gargoyles, Koumontzis brings leadership experience, having served as an alternate captain for the Sun Devils during his final two collegiate seasons.

After wrapping up his college career, Koumontzis joined the Idaho Steelheads in the ECHL. He spent two full seasons with Idaho, skating in 82 games. During that span, he scored 15 goals and recorded 19 assists for 34 points. His best professional season came in 2023–24, when he appeared in 47 games, scoring nine goals and adding 10 assists for 19 points.

Impact in Greensboro

By adding Koumontzis the Gargoyles add some professional experience to the locker room, which will be important this upcoming season. Greensboro also adds some depth to their forward group and gets a player who is capable of putting the puck in the net as well as set up others.

With the season right around the corner it is vital for the Gargoyles to continue to fill out their roster with players that can contribute night in and night out. Depth and experience will likely be key for the Gargoyles in their inaugural season as it will help them establish an identity.
