Longtime ECHL defenseman Jalen Smereck announced his retirement from professional hockey on August 20, 2026.

Smereck shared the news on his Instagram account. The announcement brings an end to a career that included time in both the ECHL and American Hockey League.

“The end of a love story…… thank you to everyone that’s been apart of this story and a special thanks to the very few who believed in me!!!” Smereck wrote. “It’s time for a new chapter of life.”

Jalen Smereck’s ECHL Career Comes Full Circle

The Detroit, Michigan, native began his ECHL career with the Fort Wayne Komets. He later returned to Fort Wayne for what became his final professional season. That brought his time in the league full circle.

Over parts of seven ECHL seasons, Smereck appeared in 319 regular-season games. He recorded 51 goals and 221 assists for 272 points. He also collected 410 penalty minutes.

Additionally, Smereck spent time in the American Hockey League. He appeared in 77 AHL games and recorded four goals and 12 assists.

His final season came with the Komets in 2025-2026. Smereck appeared in 67 regular-season games for Fort Wayne. He scored 10 goals and added 47 assists for 57 points. He also recorded 101 penalty minutes and finished the season with a plus-21 rating.

Known for his offensive production from the blue line, Smereck became one of the ECHL’s most productive defensemen. He was named to the ECHL First All-Star Team following the 2023-2024 season.

His retirement closes a professional career that began in 2017 and lasted nearly a decade.

For Smereck, the decision marks the end of his playing career. It also begins what he described as a new chapter in his life.
