The Kalamazoo Wings announced a trade with the Greensboro Gargoyles, along with a signing today.

Patrick Newell Acquired From Greensboro

The Kalamazoo Wings have acquired forward Patrick Newell from the Greensboro Gargoyles in exchange for future considerations. Newell, 30, has eight goals and 21 assists for 29 points in 46 games this season. He’s in his third season with the ECHL, having made stops with the Orlando Solar Bears and Tahoe Knight Monsters, as he has 22 goals and 59 assists for 81 points in 131 career games. Newell had three goals and two assists for five points in eight Kelly Cup Playoff games last season with the Knight Monsters. He has also seen 87 AHL games with the Hartford Wolf Pack, where he has 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points.

The Thousand Oaks, California, native spent part of three years playing overseas in Norway, Sweden, Slovakia, and Hungary. Newell’s best numbers came during his year in Norway, where he had 21 goals and 30 assists for 51 points in 42 games with Stjernen Hockey. He also won a Slovakian Extraliga Championship in 2024 with HK Nitra.

Greg Japchen Signed Out Of College

Japchen, 24, had two goals and seven assists for nine points in 57 games as he spent the last two years at Robert Morris University. Prior to playing with the Colonials, he played eight games with Union College, where he didn’t find the scoresheet, and then had three goals and 11 assists for 14 points in 30 games with Stonehill College.

The Doylestown, Pennsylvania, native spent the majority of his junior career in the NAHL, playing for four different teams. During his time in the NAHL, he had 24 goals and 29 assists for 53 points in 111 games, while also seeing action in four NAHL playoff games.
