The Greensboro Gargoyles are the new kids on the block in the ECHL this season. Being a new franchise has many challenges, as I have learned from covering the Gargoyles, but among those is bringing in an entire roster of players to a city that knows nothing about them. Fans will certainly be looking for a way to get to know more about these players, and hopefully, that is an area where I can be of some assistance. I recently had the pleasure of meeting and talking to the first Gargoyle, team captain Logan Nelson. In this article, I hope to help you get to know him better as not just an athlete, but as an individual.

Logan Nelson as a Player

Logan Nelson, the player, is as much of a hockey guy as they come. Born in Rogers, Minnesota, the young American would end up joining the WHL’s Victoria Royals, where he would have a strong 3 seasons, averaging nearly a point per game. That production was good enough to earn him two major achievements for a young hockey player: being drafted in the 5th round by the Buffalo Sabres organization, as well as being given an opportunity to try out for the United States World Juniors roster. When I talked with Logan, he pointed to the World Juniors opportunity as his favorite hockey memory, telling me, “Any time you can put on a jersey to represent your country, that is pretty special.” After his time in the WHL was over, Nelson found his way to the ECHL, where he would join the Quad City Mallards to begin his professional career. After playing for several different organizations, Nelson would eventually make his way to Rapid City, where he would meet Gargoyles Head Coach Scott Burt. That connection would pay off as he would end up in Greensboro playing for a first-year organization in back-to-back years, bringing a much-needed veteran presence to a very young locker room. Nelson provides immense leadership and is someone the fanbase, coaches, and other players tend to look to when the team is in need of some energy. Unfortunately, Logan Nelson was injured earlier this year and has been rehabbing since. When Nelson returns to the ice, fans can be sure that the Gargoyles will look and feel like a brand new team.

Logan Nelson the Person

Logan has a fantastic personality and has been more than willing to participate in anything the Gargoyles have asked of him. One notable moment from him was joining Gargoyles broadcaster Casey Ditzel in a holiday-themed syrup and pasta eating contest, and falling in competition to the broadcaster under some nefarious circumstances. Nelson, however, is more than just an athlete. In his time off due to injury, he has enjoyed watching his Packers play football and even noted that he is a firm believer that their division is the best in football. Logan Nelson is also a husband and a father. When asked about his favorite non-hockey memory, he talked about just how special it was to meet his newborn son for the first time. In Logan’s words, “It’s something I’ll never forget, you can’t top that.” Joining the Gargoyles was as much about finding the right situation for his family as it was about the right situation for his career. Logan noted that he believes one of the reasons Head Coach Scott Burt brought him in was their relationship and their shared values. Nelson is an absolute class act and a true leader. Fans should be excited to see him rejoin the Gargoyles in the very near future.
