The ECHL Department of Player Safety has announced that they’ve suspended Maine Mariners forward Shawn Element for his actions in Sunday’s game vs Wheeling Nailers. Element would throw an open ice cross-check on Nailers defenseman Aidan Sutter at the 18:12 mark of the first period. This came right after Element threw Bogdans Hodass into the boards. Element would be assessed both a minor and major for cross-checking along with a game misconduct for the cross-check on Sutter. He is eligible to return on October 15th when the Mariners visit the Nailers. That will certainly be a game to watch to see if the Nailers make him answer the bell for his hit on Sutter. In four games this season, Element has a goal and three assists for four points. This is a big loss for Maine as Element had a four-point night on Saturday vs Wheeling.
Element, 25, is in his fifth professional season, most of which have been spent at the AHL level. In 208 games with the Syracuse Crunch and Ontario Reign, he has 29 goals and 26 assists for 55 points. He’s added two assists in 12 Calder Cup Playoff games. At the ECHL level, he has five goals and eight assists for 13 points in 19 games with the Orlando Solar Bears and Maine Mariners.
Prior to going pro, the Victoriaville, Quebec, native spent five seasons in the QMJHL with three different teams. In 274 QMJHL games, he put up 89 goals and 81 assists for 170 points. He would add 13 goals and nine assists for 22 points in 23 career QMJHL games. In 2021, he would win a QMJHL Championship with his hometown team, the Victoriaville Tigres.
