Before there was Igor Shesterkin , Henrik Lundqvist and Mike Richter, legendary goaltender Eddie Giacomin made Madison Square Garden rise to its feet through his outstanding saves in net.
Wearing the No. 1 jersey, Giacomin was one of the most celebrated athletes to ever call “The World’s Most Famous Arena” home.
He was constantly showered with booming chants of “Eddie, Eddie” during a memorable 11-year stay with the New York Rangers – and his popularity was such that his name was shouted nonstop by “The Garden Faithful” when he returned in the uniform of the visiting Detroit Red Wings.
The Hall of Fame goaltender passed away at age 86 on Monday. The Rangers released the following statement:
“Eddie Giacomin was an integral member of the New York Rangers for a decade and personified what being a Ranger is all about, both to his teammates and the Blueshirts faithful,” the statement began. “You cannot discuss the history of this organization and not immediately think of Eddie.”
"The great Rod Gilbert called him the heart of their team, and we cannot think of a greater honor to bestow on one of the greatest goaltenders to ever play the game,” the statement continued. “Our thoughts are with Eddie's family, friends and teammates during this incredibly difficult time.”
Giacomin earned the Vezina Trophy after posting a 27-10-7 record in the 1970-71 season. He led the league with eight shutouts and recorded a 2.16 goals against average and a .922 save percentage.
Appearing in 539 regular season games as a Blueshirt, he won 267 games – which trails only Lundqvist (459) and Richter (301) for the franchise lead. His 49 regular season shutouts in a Rangers’ sweater ranks second behind Lundqvist’s 64.
The odd sight of Giacomin in a Red Wings uniform never sat right with Rangers fans. He returned as a visitor to The Garden on Nov. 2, 1975, and was treated like a home player with constant chants of “Eddie, Eddie.” Garden goers booed the Rangers every time they scored. Giacomin and fans alike wept throughout the emotional contest.
His connection to “The Garden Faithful” was a special and unique bond. On Mar. 15, 1989, Giacomin’s No. 1 uniform became the second in franchise history to be retired by the Rangers after the great Rod Gilbert’s No. 7.
Giacomin proudly represented the Rangers throughout his post-career life. His remarkable accomplishments in net left an indelible mark on the "Original Six" Blueshirts, who are celebrating their centennial season. He will always be No. 1 in uniform and No. 1 in the hearts of countless Rangers fans.
Rest in peace, Eddie.
