Welcome to The Oil Rig’s Edmonton Oilers best team of the decade review. Today I will be turning the clocks all the way back to the beginning of the 1980s and look at the best Oilers players of that time. Hall of Fame and other well known players like Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Mark Messier and Paul Coffey to name a few.

I will be reviewing each player (23 total) and discussing what they meant for Edmonton, their total points as an Oiler, their season’s best points total, and how many cups they won in that timeline—if they won any.

Wayne Gretzky

Wayne Gretzky is most well known to the hockey world as the “Great One” and one of, if not the best to ever play the game. What he was able to accomplish in his career was unmatched, and it showed as an Edmonton Oiler.

In 696 games with the Oilers, Gretzky produced an absurd 583 goals and 1,086 assists for 1,669 points. His career best season really helped with these numbers, as he was able to put up 52 goals and 163 assists for 215 points in only 80 games. That season, he had an average of 2.69 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 2.40 PPG. Wayne

Gretzky won all four of his Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished the feat in four of five seasons (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988).

Jari Kurri

Jari Kurri is another one of the Edmonton Oilers all time greats. In 754 games with the Oilers, Kurri produced 474 goals and 569 assists for 1,043 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 68 goals and 63 assists for 131 points in 78 games. That season, he had an average of 1.68 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 1.38 PPG.

Jari Kurri won all five of his Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished the feat in five of seven seasons (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990).

Mark Messier

Mark Messier, also known as “The Moose” is one of the best to ever play the game and is second in all time points. In 851 games with the Oilers, Messier produced 392 goals and 642 assists for 1,034 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 45 goals and 84 assists for 129 points in 79 games. That season, he had an average of 1.63 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 1.22 PPG.

Mark Messier won five of his six Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished that in five of seven seasons (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990).

Glenn Anderson

Glenn Anderson is another one of the Edmonton Oilers all time greats. In 845 games with the Oilers, Anderson produced 417 goals and 489 assists for 906 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 38 goals and 67 assists for 105 points in 80 games. That season, he had an average of 1.31 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 1.07 PPG.

Glenn Anderson won five of his six Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished that in five of seven seasons (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990.)

Brett Callighen

Brett Callighen is another one of the Edmonton Oilers who was there in the beginning of the ‘80s. In 160 games with the Oilers, Callighen produced 56 goals and 89 assists for 145 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 25 goals and 35 assists for 60 points in 55 games. That season, he had an average of 1.09 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.91 PPG.

Brett Callighen had a short stint in Edmonton and was not able to win a Stanley Cup in his three year career (1979–80, 1980–81, 1981–82).

Paul Coffey

Paul Coffey is well known in the hockey world as “Coff” and one of the best defencemen to ever play the game. What he was able to accomplish in his career was unmatched, and it showed as an Edmonton Oiler.

In 532 games with the Oilers, Coffey produced an impressive 209 goals and 460 assists for 669 points. His career best season helped with these numbers, as he was able to put up 48 goals and 90 assists for 138 points in only 79 games, all as a defensive player. That season, he had an average of 1.75 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 1.26 PPG.

Paul Coffey won three of his four Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished the feat in three of four seasons (1984, 1985, 1987).

Charlie Huddy

Charlie Huddy is another one of the Edmonton Oilers all time players. In 694 games with the Oilers, Huddy produced 81 goals and 287 assists for 368 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 20 goals and 37 assists for 57 points in 76 games. That season, he had an average of 0.75 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.53 PPG.

Charlie Huddy won all five of his Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished the feat in five of seven seasons (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990).

Craig MacTavish

Craig MacTavish is another one of the Edmonton Oilers all time players and also has Oilers coaching experience as well. In 701 games with the Oilers, MacTavish produced 155 goals and 176 assists for 331 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 21 goals and 31 assists for 52 points in 80 games. That season, he had an average of 0.65 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.47 PPG.

Craig MacTavish won three of his four Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished that in three of four seasons (1987, 1988, 1990).

Marty McSorley

Marty McSorley is another well known all time Edmonton Oiler. In 206 games with the Oilers, McSorley produced 24 goals and 36 assists for 60 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points in 60 games. That season, he had an average of 0.43 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.29 PPG.

Marty McSorley won both of his Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished that in back-to-back seasons (1987 and 1988).

Grant Fuhr

Grant Fuhr is well known in the hockey world as “Coco” and one of the best goaltenders to ever play the game. What he was able to accomplish in his career was very impressive, and it showed as an Edmonton Oiler. In 423 games with the Oilers, Fuhr put up an impressive 226 wins and 117 losses.

His best season in Edmonton saw him earn 40 wins and 24 losses, and a goals against average of 3.43 and save percentage of .881. That season, he had 246 goals scored on him and as an Oiler, an all time average of 3.69 GAA and .883 SV%.

Grant Fuhr helped the Oilers win four of their Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished the feat in four of five seasons (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988).

Jimmy Carson

Jimmy Carson is another one of the Edmonton Oilers who was there before the end of the ’80s. In 84 games with the Oilers, Carson produced 50 goals and 53 assists for 103 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 49 goals and 51 assists for 100 points in 80 games. That season, he had an average of 1.25 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 1.23 PPG.

Jimmy Carson had a short stint in Edmonton and was not able to win a Stanley Cup in the orange and blue (1988–89 and 1989–90).

Esa Tikkanen

Esa Tikkanen is one of the Edmonton Oilers who shared the ice with Gretzky in the ‘80s. In 522 games with the Oilers, Tikkanen produced 178 goals and 258 assists for 436 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 31 goals and 47 assists for 78 points in 67 games. That season, he had an average of 1.16 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.84 PPG.

Esa Tikkanen won four of his five Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished the feat in four of six seasons (1985, 1987, 1988, 1990).

Dave Semenko

Dave Semenko was yet another all-time Edmonton Oilers player. In 454 games with the Oilers, Semenko produced 59 goals and 77 assists for 136 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points in 75 games. That season, he had an average of 0.36 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.30 PPG.

Dave Semenko won both of his Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished that in back-to-back seasons (1984 and 1985).

Craig Simpson

Craig Simpson is another all time Edmonton Oiler who was there towards the end of the ‘80s.. In 419 games with the Oilers, Simpson produced 185 goals and 180 assists for 365 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 35 goals and 41 assists for 76 points in 66 games. That season, he had an average of 1.15 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.87 PPG.

Craig Simpson won both of his Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished that in two of three seasons (1988 and 1990).

Kevin McClelland

Kevin McClelland is one of the Edmonton Oilers who was there with Gretzky in the beginning of the ‘80s. In 428 games with the Oilers, McClelland produced 56 goals and 94 assists for 150 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 11 goals and 25 assists for 36 points in 79 games. That season, he had an average of 0.46 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.35 PPG.

Kevin McClelland won all four of his Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished the feat in four of five seasons (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988).

Kevin Lowe

Kevin Lowe is another well known all time Edmonton Oilers great. In 1,037 games with the Oilers, Lowe produced 74 goals and 309 assists for 383 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up four goals and 42 assists for 46 points in 80 games. That season, he had an average of 0.58 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.37 PPG.

Kevin Lowe won five of his six Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished the feat in five of seven seasons (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990).

Tom Roulston

Tom Roulston is one of the Edmonton Oilers who was there in the beginning of the ‘80s. In 137 games with the Oilers, Roulston produced 36 goals and 32 assists for 68 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 16 goals and 24 assists for 40 points in 67 games. That season, he had an average of 0.60 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.50 PPG.

Tom Roulston had a short stint in Edmonton and was not able to win a Stanley Cup in his five year career (1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986).

Mark Napier

Mark Napier is one of the Edmonton Oilers who was there in the middle of the ‘80s. In 175 games with the Oilers, Napier produced 41 goals and 71 assists for 112 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 24 goals and 32 assists for 56 points in 80 games. That season, he had an average of 0.70 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.64 PPG.

Tom Roulston had a short stint in Edmonton and won one of his two Stanley Cups in the orange and blue. He accomplished that in 1985.

Mike Krushelnyski

Mike Krushelnyski is one of the Edmonton Oilers who shared the ice with Gretzky and is one of their all time greats. In 290 games with the Oilers, Krushelnyski produced 95 goals and 131 assists for 226 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 44 goals and 45 assists for 88 points in 80 games. That season, he had an average of 1.10 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.78 PPG.

Mike Krushelnyski won all three of his Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished that in three of four seasons (1985, 1987, 1988).

Steve Smith

Steve Smith is another one of the Edmonton Oilers all time players and was also an assistant coach for the Oilers in the 2010s. In 385 games with the Oilers, Smith produced 46 goals and 172 assists for 218 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 12 goals and 43 assists for 55 points in 79 games. That season, he had an average of 0.70 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.57 PPG.

Steve Smith won all three of his Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished that in three of four seasons (1987, 1988, 1990).

Randy Gregg

Randy Gregg is another well known Edmonton Oiler, who got to share the ice with Gretzky in the ‘80s. In 453 games with the Oilers, Gregg produced 40 goals and 148 assists for 188 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 13 goals and 27 assists for 40 points in 80 games. That season, he had an average of 0.50 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.42 PPG.

Randy Gregg won all five of his Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished the feat in five of seven seasons (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990).

Petr Klima

Petr Klima is one of the Edmonton Oilers who was there in the end of the ‘80s. In 274 games with the Oilers, Klima produced 119 goals and 90 assists for 209 points.

His best season in Edmonton saw him put up 40 goals and 28 assists for 68 points in 70 games. That season, he had an average of 0.97 points per game and as an Oiler, an all time average of 0.76 PPG.

Petr Klima won his only Stanley Cup in the 80’s and accomplished the feat in 1990.

Andy Moog

Andy Moog is well known in the hockey world as “Papa Moog” and one of the best Oilers goaltenders to ever play the game. What he was able to accomplish in his career was pretty impressive. In 235 games with the Oilers, Moog put up a crazy 143 wins and 53 losses.

His best season in Edmonton saw him earn 33 wins and eight losses, with goals against average of 3.54  and save percentage of .891. That season, he had 167 goals scored on him and as an Oiler, an all time average of 3.62 GAA and .886 SV%.

Andy Moog helped the Oilers win three of their Stanley Cups in the ‘80s and accomplished that in three of four seasons (1984, 1985, 1987).

All time 1980’s roster construction

The Edmonton Oilers were one of the most dominant teams in NHL history in the ‘80s. They had some of the best players to ever play the game and were able to win five Stanley Cups in a seven year span. If you took these players and put them onto a 20-man roster, what would it look like? Here is what I came up with.

Esa Tikkanen – Wayne Gretzky – Jari Kurri
Craig Simpson – Mark Messier – Glenn Anderson
Dave Semenko – Craig MacTavish – Mark Napier
Petr Klima – Mike Krushelnyski – Kevin McClelland
