Edmonton Oilers expected to call up Philip Broberg for Tuesday game against Sharks
Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

The Edmonton Oilers will be calling up defenceman Philip Broberg from the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors for Tuesday’s game against the San Jose Sharks,  Sportsnet’s Mark Spector reported Saturday night.

Broberg, 22, has spent the majority of the season in the American League after being assigned there in December. He has appeared in 48 games, scored five goals, and scored 34 points. The assignment came after news broke of a trade request from Broberg’s camp after he spent most of the early parts of this season as a healthy scratch.

His game has taken a big step forward this year with the Condors, as he has become their de facto number-one defenceman and plays in all situations.

As the American League regular season winds to its end, he’s taken another step forward in his game. Over his last eight games, he’s racked up 12 points, including a Friday night overtime winner against the Coachella Valley Firebirds, the top team in the Condors’ division.

He took the puck from behind the Bakersfield net, flying out of the defensive zone and into the offensive zone, ripping home the game-winner. It was a goal that displayed all the things the Oilers hoped they’d get when they drafted him eighth overall in the 2019 draft, with his skating ability on full display.

The Oilers will need Broberg to continue to take a step forward in his development, as he will be someone the club will likely need on their blue line for the entirety of next season. Edmonton will have a cap crunch this offseason as they try to navigate what will, once again, be a tight salary cap situation. The laundry list of players they need to re-sign or sign to fill out a roster is long, so having Broberg on his entry-level deal will be important to be cap-compliant.

Getting him in for a game against the Sharks, at the very least, will be a nice nod to his strong season and hopefully build some more confidence in his game.
