Edmonton Oilers forward Derek Ryan's future plans have been revealed, as an announcement has been made indicating his plans to call it a career.
The Edmonton Oilers have a 1-0 series lead over the Vegas Golden Knights after their opening-round series victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
But one player who has played sparingly for them this year and not at all so far in the postseason is veteran Derek Ryan, who has yet to appear in a playoff game in 2025 and only skated in 36 games in 2024-25.
It looks like Ryan is preparing to retire from the NHL after the postseason, based on a comment written on Instagram from his spouse, Bonnie Ryan.
We are going to be selling our home here in Edmonton soon. Listing July 1.As you can imagine, this is a very bittersweet announcement. Our plan is to move back to Spokane full time once the season and school year ends. Unless an amazing opportunity presents itself. Time for the start of a new adventure for our family.
Ryan has skated in 606 career NHL games with the Carolina Hurricanes, Calgary Flames and Oilers; he has 209 points (82G, 127A).
During Edmonton's run to the Stanley Cup Final last year, he appeared in 19 playoff games and had a lone assist.
Never drafted into the NHL, Ryan played several years for the University of Alberta after having played for the WHL's Spokane Chiefs.
He made his NHL debut in 2015 with the Hurricanes, where he played until 2018 when he agreed to a 3-year contract with the Flames. He then remained in Alberta by signing a 2-year deal with the Oilers in 2021 before once again being extended in 2023 with another 2-year deal.
As Ryan heads into his next endeavor we wish him all the best!
