Edmonton Oilers Make NHL History in Game 1 Win vs. Golden Knights

Heading into the third period of Tuesday’s Game 1 matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights, the Edmonton Oilers needed a spark.

That came just 57 seconds into the final period in the form of Leon Draisaitl’s fourth goal of the playoffs, which tied the game 2-2 and injected life back into the Oilers bench.

Sixteen minutes later, Zach Hyman scored the game-winner as he skated into the high slot and fired a bullet that zipped past Golden Knights goaltender Adin Hill glove-side — the third of four Oilers’ unanswered goals.

Hyman’s goal, his third of the playoffs, also helped Edmonton make some NHL history as it became the first team in NHL history with five consecutive comeback wins in a single postseason.

The Oilers reeled off four straight wins to eliminate the Los Angeles Kings in the first round of the playoffs, and they trailed entering the third period in three of them, as they did in Tuesday’s win.

Edmonton’s accomplishments didn’t stop there, however.

Draisaitl passed the legendary Wayne Gretzky for the fifth-most game-tying goals in the playoffs (nine) in Oilers history, while Connor McDavid reached two milestones of his own.

The three-time MVP became the second-fastest player in NHL history to reach 90 career assists in the playoffs, doing so in 81 games. The only other players to hit the 90-assist mark in less than 100 games are Gretzky (63 games) and Mario Lemieux (97 games), both are Hall of Famers.

McDavid also moved into a fourth-place tie for the most consecutive postseasons with 10 or more assists. He now trails only Gretzky (seven), Jari Kuri (six) and Mark Messier (five).

The Golden Knights will look to rebound in Game 2 on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. ET. The game will be aired on ESPN.
