There’s been a lot of movement in the Edmonton Oilers system in the past week or so. There’s also been mixed results at the minor league levels with stalling team performances, but also lots of individual growth. The Oilers’ roster management and developmental model certainly is interesting.
Just like a roller coaster, there was a lot of up and down movement in the system this week.
Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues to go along with a feature one one standout prospect in Edmonton’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is born 2001 or earlier.
The North Barrington Illinois product was one of the highest profile college free agents last season. The Oilers were able to nab the Boston University Terrier with an enticing signing bonus of burning off a year of his ELC early by playing two games with the Oilers at the end of the NHL campaign
He was also a possible contender to make the Oilers out of training camp this year, but after a sluggish start to the 2025–26 season, the 2002-born sniper looks to have found his groove at the AHL level.
Hutson is a classic sniper-playmaker combo, where he derives his value from the pure offence he generates. Overall, his game is highlighted by a strong motor, with higher end offensive senses, and shooting ability, and passing skill.
Simply put, Hutson has adjusted to the pace of play well with Bakersfield. This means that his play reading, processing, and overall hockey IQ have “levelled up” to the professional ranks. For every college free agent, professional hockey is a beast that takes time to adjust to its speed, and minute details.
The most noticeable adjustment period is typically for NCAA goalies, as college hockey all-stars Owen Say, and Arsenii Sergeev prove. This adjustment period is alos evident in offensive forwards, as former prized NCAA signings like Jimmy Vesey and Spencer/Parker Foo could never fully make this adjustment.
This offensive adjustment and realization that what worked at the NCAA level might not work at the professional ranks is exactly what Oilers prospect Isaac Howard is in the middle of figuring out as well.
The NCAA is not the NHL or the AHL, so for many young players, there are metaphorical speedbumps they need to get over.
For Boston University alumnus Hutson, it is evident that he has adjusted his playmaking game to the AHL level. This is especially important because the sniper has clear skating limitations that make his playmaking style, option ID, and lane recognition in his play scans even more important.
The American-born forward has been extremely hot in the past two weeks or so, posting five assists and four goals in just nine games. The next step for Hutson’s NHL development would be finding more consistency as the season goes on.
Additionally, while his hockey senses, puck skills, and compete have all transitioned nicely, further improvements to his skating in terms of posture, power, and acceleration could make him a larger threat in transitional hockey.
