Jeremy Swayman had a tough start to 2024/25, and now, it's been revealed that the Oilers tried to take advantage and land the star goaltender from Boston.
The Edmonton Oilers have turned their goaltending around in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and after a rough start from Stuart Skinner, he's back to looking like a legit No. 1 at this point in time.
The team didn't always have that faith in him however, as they were reportedly looking to land a big fish at the trade deadline, with a recent report revealing which goaltender they were targeting at the 2025 NHL trade deadline.
Edmonton inquired about Jeremy Swayman this season, well after he signed his deal with Boston, but with how much Stuart Skinner gets criticized, Stu seems to be doing fine in net for the Oilers.
According to Pagnotta, the Oilers inquired about Swayman after he signed his eight-year extension this summer, but obviously, the team were shut down by Boston, who still see Swayman as their No. 1 moving forward despite his struggles this past year.
In Skinner, the Oilers have one of the most erratic goaltenders the NHL has perhaps ever seen, as he's been a blend of dreadful and absolutely stellar in the post-season thus far, and despite plenty of criticism, the fanbase is behind him the entire way.
Ultimately though, this is something the team might look to address again in the off-season depending on the results of this season.
If Edmonton can manage to find themselves a consistent No. 1 that can give them solid play throughout the year, there's very little holding them back from becoming a dynasty in this league.
