The Edmonton Oilers continue to sit near the top of various power rankings, climbing in Daily Faceoff’s latest look, and falling in TSN’s Sportlogiq rankings.

It comes off the trade deadline and a week in which the Oilers suffered losses to the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Buffalo Sabres in overtime. The Oilers still went 3-1-1 in the stretch, continuing to position themselves for a big month of March.

In TSN’s Sportlogiq rankings, the Oilers fell two spots from second to fourth.

Are the Edmonton Oilers Canada’s best bet to bring the Stanley Cup north of the border for the first time in 30 years? The top-ranked Canadian team in our Power Rankings is certainly playing that way.

Fresh off a 2-1-1 week, it’s looking more and more like the Oilers have cemented home-ice advantage in the first round, either as the first or second seed in the Pacific Division. At the team level, the Oilers have now gone eight straight games without allowing more than two goals in regulation/overtime.

Connor McDavid is inching closer to the top of the board in the scoring race. The Oilers captain is eight points back of Nathan MacKinnon, who leads the league with 111 points. Since the All-Star break, not only does McDavid have more points than anyone else (36), but he also has more assists than any other player has points (32).

The one team ahead of Edmonton in the Pacific will certainly have something to say about the Oilers being the favourites amongst Canadian teams. Vancouver, up seven spots from 12th to fifth on our list, is coming off one of their most impressive weeks of the season with wins over the Kings, Golden Knights and Jets.

Daily Faceoff’s rankings, meanwhile, were much warmer on the Oilers, seeing them rise from 10th up to sixth, but three spots behind the Canucks as the top Canadian team.

Mike: The Oilers have become a difficult team to pin down. Sure, they beat the Penguins on Sunday, but everyone is beating the Penguins these days. But … back-to-back losses to Columbus and Buffalo? Really!? That’s not what you want to see from a team with this much star power. I don’t think the Oilers did nearly enough at the deadline, either, especially when you compare their moves to what Vegas and Colorado did. They’ll be a tough out, but still.

Norris out for season

The Ottawa Senators will be without centre Josh Norris for the remainder of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

The 24-year-old was injured on Feb. 27th in a game against the Nashville Predators, when he attempted a hit on Cole Smith, falling into the back of the net. He collided with the post in the middle of the net.

Injuring his left shoulder in the fray, this now marks Norris’ third surgery on that joint in the past two years. He is expected to be ready for training camp next fall.

Did the Devils do enough?

There have been fewer hot-topic teams this year than the New Jersey Devils.

Predicted by many to take a step forward this season and get back into the playoffs, they’re well on the outside looking in, having fired head coach Lindy Ruff last week.

Amid a chase of Flames netminder Jacob Markstrom, which they were unable to complete ahead of the deadline, they were forced to go to Plan B in net: acquiring Jake Allen and Kaapo Kahkonen. This, mind you, came with them having the second-worst team save percentage in the league.

And on Monday’s edition of Daily Faceoff Live, Tyler Yaremchuk and Colby Cohen talked about if the trades were enough:

Colby Cohen: They did…there’s no question about it, they did. Did they find the answer long-term? Absolutely not. Look, I like Jake Allen, I think he’s kind of the perfect type of compliment goalie to a true No. 1 type of starter. Do I think he can come in and help stop the bleeding? Yeah, I do. Absolutely, they improved their goaltending situation.

I still don’t think they’re a playoff team. I still don’t think they’re all set now, by any means. I don’t think you’re running with these two guys into the sunset. They got better, but they still got work to do in that positon.
