Most seasons continue to end, with only a handful of Edmonton Oilers prospects left playing. With the Bakersfield Condors out of the AHL playoffs, the focus shifts to the ECHL affiliate of the Oilers, the Fort Wayne Komets, where rookie goaltender Nathaniel Day is making a name for himself.

Lets have a look at the playoff runs of the remaining prospects.

Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is younger than 25 years of age.

Three Leagues the Oilers Could Look to for Prospects in the Near Future

1.NCAA

With the shifting of the hockey eco-system after the CHL-NCAA rule change this has made the NCAA an even more high end developmental league. In the next four years there will be a plethora of CHL late bloomers, and that already is the Oilers memo to an extent, so don’t be surprised if they double down on the 04’s headed south of the 51st parallel.

2. Liiga

The Oilers have proven to be active in Finland, and this is a good indication that a couple of their upcoming picks might be from the Scandinavian country. This also means that there might be a heavier reliance on the European leagues, especially with all of the major junior shifting and uncertainty.

3. DEL

In our recent deeper look at the Oilers’ signing strategy, we point that to continue supplementing their prospect pool the organization will have to look in unconventional places for prospects. Much like what they did with Josh Samanski recently, look for the Oilers to have a keen eye on the top German league as it can be a site for hidden gems.

Edmonton Oilers prospect updates

AHL

  • The Condors wrapped up their season last week, expect all of their remaining moves to support the Oilers as they battle Los Angeles in the first round of the NHL playoffs.

ECHL

  • The Fort Wayne Komets have advanced to the second round of the ECHL playoffs, beating the Iowa Heartlanders in seven games.
  • Oilers prospect James Stefan appeared has appeared in all seven games, finding the score sheet with a goal and an assist so far.
  • Nathaniel Day has had a solid playoff run with the Komets appearing in the last four of their first round games, collecting two wins, an overtime loss, and one relief appearance. In game seven alone he stopped 32 of 33 shots (.970), making sure that the Komets advance to the second round.
  • Expect both Stefan and Day to continue to play games in the second round.
  • If Day continues to play well expect him to cement his organizational depth chart status above fellow Komets goalie, Ungar for next season.

NCAA

  • Bauer Berry and the Muskegon Lumberjacks are powering through the competition. They have advanced to their league final after beating the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in round one, and sweeping the Youngstown Phantoms and Dubuque Fighting Saints in rounds two and three. Berry has posted one assist across nine playoff games so far.

OHL

  • Beau Akey and Dalyn Wakely are in the middle of round three of the playoffs with the Barrie Colts. Wakely is ninth in OHL playoff points this season with 22. Both players have remained largely off the scoresheet against Oshawa in the third round. The Colts are down 0-3 against the Generals.
  • The London Knights don’t know what it means to lose going 11-0 these playoffs. Sam O’Reilly continues to help lead the charge, fourth on his team in points with 18. William Nicholl continues to show good off-puck growth.

Russia

  • This season continues to be a breakout year for Maxim Beryozkin. His team is now facing Salavat Yulaev Ufa in the 3rd round of the KHL playoffs, and the series is tied at 1-1.
