The Vancouver Canucks seem ready to listen to offers concerning their #1 center, Elias Pettersson. He has a no-movement clause in his enormous $11.6 million contract running through the 2031-32 season. So, he will decide his fate going forward.
It’s no secret that the Utah Mammoth want to add to their already talented roster. General manager Bill Armstrong has yet to replace the injured Logan Cooley and has stated he wants to add younger players to his club. Pettersson is just 27 years old and would certainly be an excellent addition to the Utah squad.
For the Canucks to receive a valued return for their star forward, they may need to retain some of his huge contract. Retaining 25 percent may be required to pull off a deal. The Mammoth have $12.4 million in cap space to attract Pettersson. Whether he allows a trade to Utah would be his choice. It’s a young and upcoming team with star players like Clayton Keller, Dylan Guenther, Cooley, and Nick Schmaltz.
Reducing Elias Pettersson’s large contract to a more workable $8.7M must be the first step in moving him. Of course, if that happens, then the return must be comparable.
When an NHL team starts a rebuild, or “retool”, they expect to receive a valuable return. In this case, according to Bill Scott of nhltraderumor.com, the Mammoth would need to return two young prospects and a 2026 first-round pick. That sounds steep, but don’t forget the Utah club would be getting a top forward for a reduced price for the next four plus years.
Scott’s projected return would be Daniil But (LW) and Caleb Desnoyers (C), and a 2026 1st Round pick. The 6′-6″, 216-pound But has three goals and three assists in 22 games. He is just 20 years old. Desnoyers has 29 points in 21 games with the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL.
While costly for the Mammoth, this trade could really catapult them this season and for another four years if it happens. Pettersson has tallied 13 goals and 16 assists in 40 games this season. He has 198 career goals and 288 assists in 511 NHL contests.
No doubt adding a quality center/wing like Pettersson would add depth to their center ice position. Right now, they have Barrett Hayton, Jack McBain, and Kevin Stenlund, along with the injured Cooley. Schmaltz has been filling in admirably during Cooley’s injury. It could be a battle for the #1 center slot between Cooley and Pettersson, but competition is a good thing.
The Mammoth are a hot team thus far in 2026. They have an excellent record of 7-1-1 and are striving towards a playoff berth. If they had a star player like Pettersson on their roster, their chances would multiply for playing in the postseason.
Whether he comes in on their first line or second line, it makes the team even stronger than before. It would also turn their power play into a very formidable unit. Pettersson has 60 power-play tallies as well as 100 assists.
While the Utah team may be more than ready to add Pettersson, it is still his decision to make. One would think he would want to join a team that is cresting as opposed to the situation he is in playing in Vancouver.
The line combinations with Pettersson in the lineup would allow head coach AndreTourigny to see where Pettersson fits in the best. Can you imagine a line of Keller, Pettersson, and Guenther? That’s some serious firepower. It just gives the Mammoth some options they don’t currently possess.
While it comes at a steep price, trading for Pettersson must be considered.
Elias Pettersson is a gifted forward who the Utah club could certainly use going forward. Now, it is up to Bill Armstrong to see if he can swing a deal. If Pettersson doesn’t agree to come to Utah, then all bets are off.
