Elliotte Friedman: Flames star 'ready for something new'

Rasmus Andersson has been a trade candidate for quite some time now, and after a recent report, it appears as though he's going to be moved this summer.

The Calgary Flames have gotten a lot younger in the last two years, and coming into the 2025 off-season, General Manager Craig Conroy's goal was to continue doing exactly that.

That has led many to believe that star defenseman Rasmus Andersson will be on the move, and although the team haven't confirmed anything yet, all signs are pointing to a blockbuster trade at some point over the summer.

According to Elliotte Friedman, Andersson is 'ready for something new', and while they aren't motivated to move him for nothing, there is significant interest in the 28-year old this off-season.

In the last three years, Andersson has tallied 31 goals and been a very consistent threat on a largely poor Calgary Flames team, and with just one year left on his current deal, he would be a very valuable asset for contending teams to acquire this summer.

With an annual cap hit of $4.5 million, a team like Carolina, Dallas or Columbus among many others could bring him in to be their top defenseman on the right side, and he would add stability at both ends with plenty of goal scoring ability.

Ultimately, it appears to be a matter of when, not if Andersson is traded by the Flames, and with the team wanting to add more assets in the 2025 NHL Draft, don't be surprised to see a deal get done on or before the 2025 NHL Draft day, with plenty of suitors out there that would make sense for Andersson and Calgary.
