Unlike other leagues, the NHL doesn't have an award for the most improved player each season. Regardless, that doesn't mean every team sees at least one of its players step up in a way they hadn't previously. Every improvement is also different as there are varying degrees. Some see good players rise to stardom, while other examples see a fringe roster player become a solid role player. Whatever the level of development, every NHL team has someone who fits the bill in the 2022-23 season.
The 28-year-old posted a career-high 41 points in 81 games. His 22 goals were the second most of his career while his 19 assists were the most he's had in a campaign. His elevated play also saw him become a piece of Anaheim's powerplay unit as he produced five goals and four assists on the man advantage.
The clear-cut top piece in Arizona, Keller took that step to stardom in his seventh season. His 86 points were well ahead of his prior high of 63. His career year was spearheaded with his 37 goals and 49 assists. There's not a lot to be excited about in Arizona, but Keller is the one exception.
What a season for the former Anaheim defender. Lindholm was brilliant as he produced 53 points. He scored 10 goals, which was his third time reaching double digits in that category and his first since the 2017-18 season. His career-high 43 assists was the biggest difference for him as his prior high was 27 in 2014-15.
How is this not Tage Thompson? Well, the Buffalo phenom was already on the stardom path. With Tuch, he had never really ever produced at this level in his six prior seasons. Year 7 was his best with 36 goals, 43 assists and 79 points, all of which were bests. The 26-year-old now gives Buffalo even more hope moving forward with its young core.
Toffoli has played all 82 games four times in his 11-year career. One of those came this season for the 31-year-old and that happened to be his biggest season to date. His 73 points far exceeded his previous best of 58 in 2015-16 with Los Angeles as he tallied a career-best 34 goals and 39 assists.
The former first-round pick really came into his own this season. His 71 points blew past any of his prior years as he paced the Hurricanes in scoring. He added 28 goals, nearly doubling his previous high. Necas found success this year on the man advantage as he scored nine times on the powerplay.
Another case of someone who should be improving, Raddysh saw his second season feature far more consistency than his rookie campaign, which was split between two teams. He racked up 20 goals and 17 assists as one of the few bright spots for the struggling Blackhawks.
His first year in Colorado was a tremendous success. After five years with the Rangers, Georgeiv was finally given the keys to the crease. He rewarded his new club with a 40-16-6 record, easily surpassing his previous high of 17 wins. He tied his career-high in save percentage (.918) while having his best save percentage (.918) to date en route to five shutouts.
Columbus doesn't necessarily offer up many candidates for improvement. A top-heavy and older team, there wasn't much to get excited about with younger players. Boqvist's 24 points were the most of any of his four seasons as his 19 assists easily surpassed his prior high of 11. The 22-year-old saw his time on ice increase and should continue seeing more in the following years.
What a jump this was for Robertson. He fully reached stardom this campaign with 109 points and 63 of those coming from assists. The season before saw him finish with 79 points for comparison. He was one of 11 players in the NHL to eclipse 100 points. He finished 10th in the league in assists, as well.
Detroit is another team that didn't see much growth among individuals. The team's leading scorer did at least improve upon his numbers with a career year. Larkin's 79 points are tops in his career as he tied his previous best of 32 goals. Sixteen of those scores came on the man advantage, which was the 10th most in the NHL.
Hyman’s been around some high-powered teams before after six seasons in Toronto and now in his second term with Edmonton. He finally put it all together more so than expected this season with career-highs in points (83), assists (47), and goals (36). His improvement was dramatic on the man advantage as he really rose to the occasion for Edmonton with 15 goals on the man advantage.
There aren't enough words to explain the season Montour had. In his seventh season, the former second-round pick seemed to put it all together en route to 73 points. He once had 35 points back in 2018-19, showing just how drastic this improvement was. Montour’s 57 assists were 7th among defensemen.
Kempe’s been knocking on the doorstep for a few seasons as he showed his potential in the 2021-22 campaign with 54 points. He continued his improvement with 67 this season as he eclipsed 40 goals for the first time, a feat only 19 players accomplished this season.
His 61 points and 38 assists were all career-bests. He also developed his two-way game even more as he was responsible for 44 takeaways, 14 more than his previous high. He also had two short-handed goals, the first two of his career.
The 2019 first-rounder slowly progressed in his first three years before taking a step up. He collected 38 points as he tallied his first double-digit goal season with 14. Montreal was dismal this season but the teams second-leading scorer at least showed promise.
There were 74 games under Glass’ belt coming into this season. He had 24 points in that span across two seasons in Vegas and one in Nashville. His fourth season surpassed all of that as he scored 14 times and added 21 helpers for 35 points as he took a major step forward.
The Devils have quite a few candidates here but their success starts between the pipes. Vanacek had success in Washington before moving to New Jersey, but he really showed how reliable he could be in his 48 starts with his new club. His 33 wins were well above his previous high of 21 and he posted career bests in save percentage (.911) and goals against average (2.45).
The 31-year-old has been around for quite a while. That didn't stop him from having the best season of his career. His 75 points were 16 more than his previous high and his 39 helpers were 11 more than his prior career high set in 2019-20.
After suiting up for all 82 games in his second season, Miller used his third campaign to fully assert himself on the ice. The defenseman doubled his scoring with 43 points with 34 assists. This came after putting up 20 assists in his first 135 career games.
Stützle took his third season and ran with it. His 90 points led the way for the Senators as did his 51 assists. He also elevated his goal-scoring from 22 to 39 this season. There's a ton of promise with this 21-year-old.
Acquired in the Claude Giroux trade, Tippett was supposed to deliver. Still, it's nice to see him actually do so. Travis Konecny has a case to be made but he performed at a pace that's been seen before. Tippett’s 49 points were more than all of his three seasons before.
The Penguins would like to forget this season. For Joseph, he at least saw a full-season where he tallied 21 points. Before this, he has only appeared in 20 games the prior two seasons.
It seems strange that Karlsson, who has been a star in this league, is on this list, but since the 2016-17 season, he's never cracked more than 67 points nor played more than 56 games. In 2022-23, Karlsson was on full display in all 82 games and treated San Jose with 101 points on 25 goals and 76 assists, all three being highs.
The rise of Dunn continues after coming to Seattle through the expansion draft. He amassed 50 assists, exceeding his prior high of 28. He also added 14 goals, both of which were season bests. He was one of 10 defensemen to record 50 assists.
This was a season to forget for the Blues. With not much to be excited about, there was an emergence from Blais as he established himself a solid role player after coming over from the Rangers. In 31 games, he tallied 20 points, which alone was more than he's had in any prior season.
A sixth-round pick in 2016, Hagel never had expectations on him. That's what makes his 2022-23 campaign so impressive, as his career year saw him increase his scoring by 20 points with 64. He also posted 30 goals, which was tied with Nikita Kucherov for third on the team.
Järnkrok has been around for a while in the NHL. The improvement he showed in his first season in Toronto was impressive. When it comes to the Maple Leafs, most of their talent has already emerged, so Järnkrok’s first-ever 20-goal season is enough to warrant this recognition.
The 2017 first-round pick was in elite company this season with more than 100 points. His 63 assists nearly doubled his prior high as he paced the Canucks in almost every offensive category. The trio of Pettersson, J.T. Miller, and Quinn Hughes gives Vancouver confidence moving forward.
When Logan Thompson went down in March, the Knights' season could have spiraled. Instead, Hill rose to the occasion with his best year to date. In the regular season, Hill went 16-7-1 with a .915 save percentage and 2.45 goals against average, both career highs. What's been most impressive is his playoff run, which has seen him 7-3 with a .937 save percentage and allowing just a tick above two goals per game as the Knights head to the Cup finals.
Now on his third team in seven years, Strome treated Washington to his most prolific season. He reached 65 points with a career-best 23 goals. The Capitals had a down year all around so Strome really was the lone player who showed notable improvement.
The Winnipeg assistant captain has always been a steady player for the Jets. He always was good for about 30-35 points a season and consistent play on the backend. He blew those numbers out of the water as the 28-year-old reached 76 points with 16 goals and 60 assists, all of which are career highs.
