The Pittsburgh Penguins’ season came to an end at the hands of the cross-state Philadelphia Flyers in six games in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Now, the team has to look towards the future and how to progress in 2026-27. One decision that needs to be made is the future of Evgeni Malkin. Malkin has been clear: he wants to keep playing.

Now, Malkin and his camp are making the next step towards continuing to play in the NHL next year, per Penguins beat writer Josh Yohe.

“Geno Malkin’s camp will be reaching out to Kyle Dubas this week to discuss when they’ll be sitting down to talk about Malkin’s future,” Yohe posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Malkin was the second overall selection of the 2004 NHL Draft by the Penguins. He broke into the NHL in the 2006-07 season and immediately made an impact, scoring 33 goals and adding 52 assists. He also won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the Rookie of the Year. Since then, He has played in 1,269 regular-season games with the Penguins. In that time, he has found the back of the net 533 times, adding 874 assists. He has also played in 183 playoff games with 69 goals and 114 helpers.

In his career with the Penguins, Malkin has been a seven-time NHL All-Star, won the Art Ross Trophy twice, as well as winning the Conn Smythe Trophy, Hart Memorial Trophy, and Ted Lindsay award all one time. He has lifted the Stanley Cup three times in his career with the Pens.

Now, Kyle Dubas needs to decide if he wants to continue the Big Three era in Pittsburgh with Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and Kris Letang. If so, the first step is to bring back Malkin.
