The NHL draft is over, and the rush surrounding free agency has settled. NHL fans are sitting around waiting for their teams to make a blockbuster trade, the release of the schedule, and, quite honestly, anything else. Today, we’re diving back into the Armchair GM series, which allows us to explore dream scenarios and complete fantasies.
Bowen Byram is reportedly looking for $9M AAV on his next deal. Byram, a 24-year-old left-handed defenceman, is capable of playing on the right side. The Calgary Flames are interested in signing him, but weren’t able to agree on a contract. The Flames have to get to negotiating, and Conroy shouldn’t be throwing any first-round picks to the Buffalo Sabres.
I would be elated if the Flames moved Yegor Sharangovich and Martin Pospisil at the same time. They would no longer be saddled with a five-year deal for a bottom-nine forward, and two roster spots become available. Making these kinds of decisions is part of the game. The Flames have to move some wingers if they expect to move forward in their rebuild.
Verdict: Unsure. It looks great on paper. However, I do worry about the logjam the Flames are currently dealing with on the back end. Signing Byram allows a cushion in the top four, giving Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz time to develop and not rush them into full-time roles.
I don’t think the Flames are interested in future considerations—very likely nothing—for any of their players. Calgary would likely need a few draft picks in return.
Verdict: Yes, but only if the New Jersey Devils revise their offer.
The Flames have a few defencemen who will likely see time in the press box, including Daniil Miromanov. I think a fourth-round pick is generous.
Verdict: Yes.
The Calgary Flames are not moving Blake Coleman for future considerations. They would be foolish to do so. Coleman was traded from New Jersey to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Would he be willing to uproot his family and move back to the East Coast? Moving Coleman should be on the Flames’ radar. They would be able to collect some valuable assets and make room for another young forward. It would be a win-win for Calgary.
Verdict: No, the Devils need to come back with a serious offer.
In my opinion, the Flames don’t have any “untouchables” outside of Zayne Parekh, Dustin Wolf, MacKenzie Weegar, and maybe Matt Coronato. Everyone else is up for grabs. There are options on the table, and the Flames can’t be afraid of making tough decisions. The 2026 draft class is expected to be one of the better drafts in recent years. I wouldn’t want the Flames to give up that extra pick.
Verdict: Jury is still out on this one. I think there have to be some revisions.
We made it a week without a Rasmus Andersson trade proposal. This is the first time that this has happened all offseason. Maybe we’ll see something transpire in real life.
