Montreal Canadiens' Lane Hutson has taken home the NHL's Calder Trophy for best rookie, and fans are outraged that Sharks' Macklin Celebrini came in third.

Montreal Canadiens blue liner Lane Hutson has been awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy, given annually for the NHL rookie of the year.

Hutson led the rookies with 66 points, putting the Canadiens in the playoffs for the first time since the 2020-21 season. With his rookie record for the most assists, which is 60, it ties only with that of Larry Murphy.

Flames' Dustin Wolf finished 2nd, ahead of Celebrini

Hutson outranked the two other rookies: San Jose Sharks winger Macklin Celebrini and Calgary Flames goalie Dustin Wolf. He had collected 1,832 points and polled 165 of the 191 first-category votes.

Wolf had 1,169 points, with Celebrini trailing him with 1,104 points. Philadelphia's Matvei Michkov and Anaheim's Cutter Gauthier finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Celebrini's third-place finish sparked anger from the fans, who believed that he had been overlooked. The 18-year-old tallied 25 goals and 63 points in 70 games for an underachieving Sharks team, often carrying the offense.

The playmaking and workhorse status stirred controversy among fans, who believed that he was due, and even deserved more than second or third place.

Wolf, who posted a 29-16-8 record with a save percentage of .910 and goals-against average of 2.64 during his 53 games with the Flames, impressed.

Hutson started last season strong with two assists in two games after being selected in the second round, selection number 62, of the NHL Draft in 2022. He is entering his last season of his entry-level contract and becomes extension-eligible on July 1.
