Finnie Fever Taking Over Detroit
Gerry Angus-Imagn Images

The hype around Emmitt Finnie has never been higher after he doubled dipped against the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday. The 2023 7th round draft pick is now tied for first in scoring among rookies this season with 2 goals, 3 assists and 5 points in 6 games. The Red Wings forward has been playing on the wing of Dylan Larkin and opposite Lucas Raymond. The rookies has jumped in to fill the highly touted position, cementing his spot through the first leg of the season. Finnie plays a scrappy, hard-nosed game that compliments the skill and finesse game that Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond play with. It seems like a match made in heaven and it seems to be bringing out the best in Dylan Larkin as well as he has been able to put up 11 points in his first 6 games, most of which have come alongside Emmitt Finnie. The hype is real and despite being a late pick, unlike Sandin-Pellikka and Brandsegg-Nygard, Finnie has been one of the NHL’s best rookies and Red Wings fans can hope to see him continue on this path.

Finnie’s High Praise

Dylan Larkin and Todd McClellan have been blunt when talking about Finnie. They both credit his rise to one thing; fearlessness. Emmitt Finnie is confident going against anyone, anywhere on the ice in any moment. Larkin says that Finnie’s good moxie is rubbing off on him and hopefully the lack of nerves are a deciding factor this season as Detroit looks to make the playoffs. He seems to be well received on the ice as well. The team look genuinely excited to see Finnie get his first goal. Keeping him as a top line staple has shown the coaching staff’s trust in him. It’s still early but there is yet to be any form of a call out on Finnie’s play from Todd McClellan and the Red Wings coaching staff.

A Deeper Dive

Deployment: 68% D-zone starts, +1.922 quality of competition, 39.7 CF%

Counting Stats: 21 hits, 4 blocked shots, 16.7% shooting percentage, 3.2 points/60

Finnie has been taking on top competition alongside Dylan Larkin. His numbers are impressive to start and he has done it without the power play and while Lucas Raymond was missing for a few games to start. It’s incredibly unlikely Finnie will continue on his current 68 point pace, but he may exceed Marco Kasper’s impressive rookie season where Kasper had 37 points.
