Flames News & Rumors: Carlo, Sharangovich, Parekh & More

In this edition of Calgary Flames News & Rumours, general manager (GM) Craig Conroy is said to have interest in Boston Bruins defenceman Brandon Carlo. In other news, Yegor Sharangovich sat as a healthy scratch during Saturday’s game versus the Carolina Hurricanes. Meanwhile, the Flames are reportedly looking to trade defenceman Daniil Miromanov. Last but not least, prospect Zayne Parekh recently matched a Bobby Orr milestone.

Flames Interested in Carlo

Yesterday, Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco reported that Conroy has reached out to the Bruins regarding defenceman Brandon Carlo. The 28-year-old carries a $4.1 million cap hit through the 2026-27 season.

“Sounds like the Flames have reached out on Bruins defenceman Brandon Carlo,” Di Marco wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Teams have yet to dive into details, but Calgary is interested.”

Carlo is a right-shot defenceman who stands at a hulking 6-foot-5, 220 pounds. Despite his size, he doesn’t provide a ton of physicality, but is able to get into lanes and break up plays thanks to his long reach. In 64 games this season, he’s registered a goal and nine points while averaging slightly less than 19 minutes in ice time.

Struggling Sharangovich Healthy Scratched

The Flames appeared to strike gold after acquiring Yegor Sharangovich from the New Jersey Devils ahead of the 2023-24 season. Despite his inconsistencies with the Devils, Sharangovich was viewed as a highly-skilled forward who may thrive with a change in scenery. That appeared to be the case, as he scored 31 goals and tallied 59 points in his first season with the Flames.

The big season earned Sharangovich a five-year, $28.75 million deal. It was one that Flames fans were quite happy about at the time, but are starting to wish didn’t take place. The 26-year-old has struggled immensely with 11 goals and 22 points through 52 outings, and it’s clear head coach Ryan Huska is growing frustrated.

Huska chose to sit Sharangovich as a healthy scratch versus the Hurricanes on Sunday in a move that got plenty talkin but was felt to be the right decision. Sharangovich has failed to make an impact this season and needs to pick up his game in a big way to justify his lucrative extension which doesn’t kick in until 2025-26.

Parekh Accomplishes Huge Milestone

Parekh is looking like an absolute steal for the Flames. They were able to select the 19-year-old defenceman ninth overall in the 2024 NHL Entry following a 33-goal, 96-point season with the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Saginaw Spirit last season. He’s been even better in 2024-25, registering 30 goals and 96 points through just 55 outings.

On Sunday, Parekh scored his 30th of the season in an 8-3 win over the North Bay Battalion and in doing so, joined Bobby Orr as the second defenceman in OHL history to score 30 or more goals in multiple seasons. Orr registered 34 goals in 1964-65 and 38 in 1965-66 while playing for the Oshawa Generals.

Flames Looking to Trade Miromanov

The Miromanov experiment may soon be coming to an end in Calgary. The 27-year-old was part of a package the Flames received from the Vegas Golden Knights in a trade last season that saw Noah Hanifin head out the door. Though he’d only logged 29 NHL games to that point, there was a belief he would relish being on a team where he’d be given a real opportunity to show himself.

Instead of stepping up and grabbing the opportunity, Miromanov has struggled to make an impact. His defensive play has been suspect, and he hasn’t been able to provide the offence that he’s shown in the American Hockey League (AHL). Through 37 games, he’s managed just a goal and seven points, and his struggles may lead to him being traded.

“I think they’re trying to find a place for Miromanov,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on his 32 Thoughts Podcast. “He’s not really playing. He’s still a pretty young guy, wants to play. I think that they probably try to find somewhere for him.”

Miromanov does still have some potential as Friedman suggested, which may result in a team opting to give him another chance. Helping both him and the Flames in a potential trade is the fact that he’s under a contract with a cap hit of just $1.25 million through 2025-26.

Looking Ahead for the Flames

Though holding on to a playoff spot, the Flames have struggled a bit as of late, having lost three-straight games. They’ll look to get back on track tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers, before playing the final game of a six-game road trip versus the Dallas Stars on Thursday. Their week will end with a Saturday matchup at the Scotiabank Saddledome against the Montreal Canadiens, the day after the 2025 Trade Deadline.
