Flames prospect Owen Say out for rest of season after surgery for lower body injury

In advance of Monday afternoon’s clash between the Calgary Wranglers and Manitoba Moose at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, the Wranglers provided an update on a player who’s been absent from their roster for awhile.

Per the Wranglers announcement, goaltender Owen Say has undergone surgery for a lower body injury and will miss the remainder of the season. (His timeline will be re-evaluated at the end of the season.)

Say was originally injured midway through the Wranglers’ Jan. 10 game in Abbotsford against the Canucks. He was dubbed month-to-month after his initial injury.

A 24-year-old product of London, Ontario, Say joined the Flames during the spring of 2025 after signing a one year entry-level deal with the club following three seasons in the NCAA – two with Mercyhurst University and one with the University of Notre Dame.

During his first pro season, he made 19 appearances – 17 starts – and went 6-7-4 with a 3.36 goals against average and .889 save percentage and one shutout. Say showed flashes of real promise during the season, with his best outing potentially being a 46-save overtime loss against the San Jose Barracuda on Dec. 19. He also blanked the hated Coachella Valley Firebirds for a 44-save shutout win on Dec. 9. He began the season backing up veteran Ivan Prosvetov, then operated in a rotating tandem with fellow rookie Arsenii Sergeev when Prosvetov was injured, then was sidelined with his own injury. Say is a pending restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Say joins a growing list of players across the Flames organization expected to miss the remainder of the season. That list also includes NHL forwards Sam Honzek (upper body) and Jonathan Huberdeau (lower body) and blueliner Jake Bean (undisclosed), as well as college prospects Henry Mews (lower body) and Cullen Potter (upper body).

The Wranglers are back in action on Friday night when they visit the Bakersfield Condors.
