A big blueliner is staying in Alberta for a long time.
On Saturday, the Calgary Flames announced that the team has re-signed defenseman Kevin Bahl to a six-year contract extension. The deal will carry an AAV of $5.35 million through the 2029-30 season.

Bahl is receiving a hefty pay bump from his previous agreement. The New Westminster, British Columbia native was at the end of his two-year contract, which he signed with the New Jersey Devils in July 2023. That deal had a cap hit of $1.05 million.
Bahl had been with the Devils for the past four seasons prior to being traded to the Flames as part of the deal that saw goaltender Jacob Markstrom get dealt to the Devils.
While the Flames might’ve had a tough go during the 2024-25 season, wasting a solid start to the season before missing out on the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third straight season, Bahl actually had the best year of his young NHL career. In 73 games, the 25-year-old set career highs in goals (3), assists (17) and points. While he registered a plus/minus of -6, Bahl averaged over 21 minutes of ice time per game, another career best.
It was the second season in a row where the left-handed-shooting rearguard posted 10 points in a season, as the former Ottawa 67 notched 11 points during the 2023-24 campaign in New Jersey, his first full-time season in the NHL.
In 221 appearances, Bahl has scored seven goals and 38 assists for 45 points, notching an assist in 11 playoff games with New Jersey in 2023.
Along with his NHL experience, Bahl has spent some time on the international stage in his younger days. He played for Canada Red at the 2016 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge, representing his country at the 2018 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship. Bahl won the medal with Team Canada at the 2017 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship.
With the new signing, the Flames are projected to have a little over $23.5 million for the 2025-26 season, according to CapWages.
