Flames Sign Brennan Othmann To One-Year Deal

One of the final remaining restricted free agents has signed a new contract for the 2026-27 season. According to a team announcement, the Calgary Flames have signed forward Brennan Othmann to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Othmann $975K in the NHL.

Othmann, 23, was selected with the 16th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft by the New York Rangers. Although he was supposed to play for the OHL’s Flint Firebirds, Othmann spent his draft season with the NL’s EHC Olten because the OHL campaign was cancelled. He spent his two post-draft years with the Firebirds and Peterborough Petes, registering an impressive 79 goals and 164 points in 122 games.

The Scarborough, ON native transitioned to the professional ranks ahead of the 2023-24 season. He spent much of his first season with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, scoring 21 goals and 49 points in 67 games with a -24 rating. Othmann registered an additional goal and four assists in 10 postseason contests.

Despite the relative success in the AHL, the Rangers slow-played Othmann’s development. He went scoreless in three games to begin his NHL career.

Still, New York gave Othmann more opportunity the following year. Unfortunately, it became apparent relatively quickly that the Rangers weren’t comfortable moving Othmann up in the lineup. He understandably took a step back in his production, finishing with no goals and two assists in 22 games with New York, averaging less than 10 minutes of ice time per game. Othmann performed much better in the AHL, scoring 12 goals and 20 points in 27 games.

Frustrated by the season and believing he no longer had a reasonable path in the Rangers organization, the two sides began looking for a change-of-scenery trade early in the 2025-26 season. Regardless, Othmann wouldn’t be moved until the trade deadline. Before the Flames acquired him, Othmann finished his tenure in New York with one goal in 17 NHL games, and eight goals and 16 points in 26 AHL contests.

Now with Calgary, Othmann has a much cleaner path to NHL minutes than he did with the Rangers. It’s not a guarantee he’ll crack the Flames’ opening night roster, as evidenced by the two-way pact, but Othmann can reasonably challenge for and even secure one during training camp.
