While talk had quieted on the trade front when it came to forward Sam Bennett, it appears the Calgary Flames are, in fact, moving the previously disgruntled winger just minutes ahead of the expiry of trade deadline day. Chris Johnston is reporting that “a trade is in the works to send Sam Bennett to Florida.” Multiple other outlets are reporting the trade as well.

Interestingly, this comes hours after Bennett publicly rescinded his desire to be traded, saying he was much happier playing under new coach Darryl Sutter. Perhaps Florida made too strong an offer not to take the deal seriously. Pierre LeBrun is reporting, “2nd RD pick plus a prospect.” Ray Ferraro mentioned it wasn’t that far off of what Taylor Hall fetch, something he thought was interesting.

The Panthers are a serious playoff contender and Bennett has a history of performing well in the postseason, even if his regular season production isn’t terribly wonderful. Craig Button called him a good depth option, but that Bennett won’t be asked to bring them offense in the top six. His career has turned into one where he’ll just be asked to stir the pot and help provide energy.

What Bennett Brings the Panthers

His got size and skating, but he’s never been able to keep a spot in the lineup, bouncing back and forth between left wing and center. It never seemed like he was comfortable with the Flames. Perhaps the Panthers are hoping a change of pace will help him wipe the slate clean and hit the refresh button to get going again.

This is a player that many thought should have much higher ceiling than he’s shown. He was, at one time, a player that some thought could go at the top of this draft class. The Flames will remember him as a playoff beast, but not someone who could provide much else. He brings depth and character and one has to assume he’ll come into Florida motivated.

Bennett is a pending RFA.
