Flyers expected to name John Tortorella next head coach

The Philadelphia Flyers are reportedly on the doorstep of hiring their next head coach.

It was reported in May that New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz was the Flyers' "first choice" to be their leader.

If Tortorella is indeed brought in as Philadelphia's next man on the bench, the organization will get a coach with plenty of experience. Starting with the 1999-2000 campaign with the New York Rangers, Tortorella has seen time as an NHL head coach in parts of 20 different seasons with four different franchises.

The 63-year-old helped the Tampa Bay Lightning capture their first Stanley Cup crown in 2004 and has earned two Jack Adams Awards as the league's Coach of the Year. He's guided the Lightning, Rangers and most recently the Columbus Blue Jackets to playoff appearances.

Tortorella didn't coach during the 2021-2022 season, instead serving as a studio analyst for the NHL on ESPN.
