The Philadelphia Flyers’ offseason search for goaltending clarity may be leading them north of the border.
With limited options in free agency, Philadelphia has reportedly been linked to the Vancouver Canucks' Arturs Silovs, a 24-year-old netminder who just backstopped AHL Abbotsford to a Calder Cup and earned playoff MVP honors.
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, the Canucks are getting close to a contract extension with netminder Thatcher Demko, making Silovs expendable.
Kevin Kurz of The Athletic revealed that Philadelphia is looking for another goalie to pair with Samuel Ersson and is reluctant to hand out a multi-year contract to any of the veteran goalies available in the free agent market. Kurz suggested the Flyers might take a look at Silovs.

"(Demko's extension) could open the door for the club to move 24-year-old goalie Arturs Silovs," Kurz wrote. "Might Silovs, who is signed through next season at $850,000, be someone the Flyers call on?"
Vancouver would need to place Silovs on waivers to assign him to the AHL next season, a risk the Canucks may not be willing to take as any other team could claim him, forcing Vancouver to lose him for nothing.
Philadelphia’s goaltending situation remains unsettled. Ersson, Ivan Fedotov and Aleksei Kolosov are all under contract, but the latter two struggled last season and are newcomers to the NHL.
That's why general manager Daniel Briere didn’t downplay the position’s instability during the team's end-of-season media availability held in late April.
"We realize the goalies did not play to the expectations that we had," Briere said. "If we have a chance to improve, we are going to have to seriously consider it."
The Flyers enter the offseason with $15.1 million in cap space, while the Canucks have just $7 million in cap room.
