After breaking a five-year postseason drought last season, the Philadelphia Flyers have gotten off to a pathetic start this year. Already through seven games in the 2026-27 season, the Flyers are still searching for their first win.
Oftentimes, a start this poor prompts change, particularly at the head coaching position. However, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman poured water on that idea yesterday, saying he “would be surprised” if Philadelphia fired Rick Tocchet one year after hiring him. Still, unless Flyers ownership unexpectedly makes an even bolder move like firing Daniel Brière, the change will likely happen to the roster.
In a new write-up, Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff posits three eligible trade candidates on the Flyers: Noah Cates, Owen Tippett, and Travis Konecny. Di Marco stated that Philadelphia has few players considered untouchable on the roster, but there are reasons to believe these are the three most likely trade candidates on the team.
First, Di Marco correctly notes that Cates and Tippett have been mentioned in trade rumors for years. Unfortunately, although the Flyers could replace Cates internally and his departure would likely send a message to the team, Philadelphia likely wouldn’t recoup much value for him. Furthermore, their high asking price for Tippett may make it impossible for the Flyers to agree on a trade with an interested suitor.
Unlike Cates and Tippett, Konecny hasn’t been viewed as a legitimate trade candidate, especially since he signed an eight-year, $70MM extension in 2024. Still, although Brière signed Konecny, the organization has reportedly soured on him of late.
In his article, Di Marco wrote, “Speaking with sources Monday, there is a growing sense of frustration from within the Flyers organization with Konecny. According to one source, Konecny doesn’t isn’t overly impactful when he isn’t scoring or antagonizing the opposing team. The play often dies on his stick, making bad decisions with the puck that often lead to turnovers. As one source said, the one-constant on the Flyers’ struggling power play the last number of seasons has been Konecny – a fairly-damning criticism.”
Furthermore, Di Marco wrote, “According to sources, approaching Konecny to waive his no-movement clause could be an option should the Flyers continue to struggle.” However, the Flyers could be limited to just asking. As we’ve seen play out multiple times recently, players are unafraid to utilize their no-movement clauses, no matter the perceived cost.
At face value, approaching Konecny to waive his no-movement clause would look a lot like Brière smashing his fist on the panic button. Konecny is the second-longest-tenured player on the team behind Sean Couturier, and has been slightly under a point-per-game pace for the last three years. However, if the Flyers’ brass has been frustrated with Konecny for some time, trading him is more defensible and could be the locker-room-shaking change they need.
Many teams would be interested in Konecny if he waived his no-movement clause, with the Utah Mammoth being an obvious destination per Di Marco. The Mammoth would have to clear some salary to acquire Konecny, but it could be as simple as adding Lawson Crouse to the return package, who is a pending unrestricted free agent.
Di Marco stated that the Flyers have had interest in Utah prospect Caleb Desnoyers since the 2025 NHL Draft. However, as the saying goes, “it takes two to tango.” Desnoyers only recently began his professional career with the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners, and there’s no reason to believe they would be willing to move him already, especially since Konecny isn’t a game-breaking talent, with all due respect.
Still, there is no doubt that he is a good fit for the Mammoth. Konecny would fit seamlessly on the right wing of Utah’s top-three forward lines, and André Tourigny’s quick-transition offensive approach could better suit Konecny’s playstyle.
